8. I know customer service people are trained to be polite |
|
I am assuming you are talking about consumer services and they call you Sir. They are trained to be polite, so maybe they are just being polite. If I get a call at my home, they always ask me, 'may I speak to your mother'? Well, I am the mother, but I never let them know that. I just tell them she is not here (she is deceased).

10. My dad taught me to call anyone older than me "Sir" or "Ma'am". |
|
I'm in my mid-fifties and I call just about everyone "Sir" or Ma'am. Unless they're kids. Just a habit.

12. Whenever anyone compliments me on my manners, I say the same thing... |
|
. . . . . . . . . . ..."I blame my mom." . . . . . . . . . . . The Army didn't hoit. . . . . . Now, my dilemma is when to call someone "Miss". . . . I don't want anyone feeling prematurely "older" by calling her "Ma'am", but I don't want to appear condescending by calling an older woman "Miss". . . . . . . . What's that? MY personal preference? . . . . . . . . . If you could see me, you'd know what a foolish question that is. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I'm most often referred to by strangers as "Yo... Bootylicious!!!" . . . . . . . . . . . . It just rolls off the tongue so naturally. . . .

13. The first time I was called "sir" when I wasn't on a military installation |
|
was when I realized I was actually getting old. A black, black day. I hated it. And I also hated the fact that the young woman who called me that was a real cutie. I won't say that things went downhill ever afterward, but it definitely was a milestone.

19. I don't mind ma'am as much as "terms of endearment" from strangers! |
|
Since when is it OK to call "older" women "darling" and "sweetheart"??? How condescending is that!!!
Around here, a lot of people call strangers "hon" too. (Also popular in Baltimore! :) )

21. Its a really southern thing . I was brought up doing it and now I fight it all the time.... |
|
I'm in my late 50's and really old habits are hard to break but I'm really trying. And please believe me it isn't intended as condescending. I think its probably meant to be ingratiating but it certainly doesn't come off that way these days.
My sexism cuts both ways. In my ignorant youth (30 years ago) I was also prone to referring to other young men as "Chief". Unfortunately I once had a client who was a young male Choctaw . He was not impressed.
You live, and hopefully you learn and get better.

20. What about that semi immortal classic, "To sir. With love!" |
|
Actually I hear you. I get voted in as "the man" every year. 15 years running now. I am the lone dissenting vote. I want to "stick it to the man", not be the man.
