So...anyone want to go to MIT? Free of charge?
It's self-taught, and you don't get the degree, but it's the real stuff for the intellectually insatiable here. :)

Welcome to MIT's OpenCourseWare:
a free and open educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners around the world. OCW supports MIT's mission to advance knowledge and education, and serve the world in the 21st century. It is true to MIT's values of excellence, innovation, and leadership.

What is MIT OpenCourseWare?
The idea behind MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) is to make MIT course materials that are used in the teaching of almost all undergraduate and graduate subjects available on the Web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world. MIT OCW will advance technology-enhanced education at MIT, and will serve as a model for university dissemination of knowledge in the Internet age. This venture continues the tradition at MIT, and in American higher education, of open dissemination of educational materials, philosophy, and modes of thought, and will help lead to fundamental changes in the way colleges and universities utilize the Web as a vehicle for education.

700 Courses Now Available
With the publication of 700 courses, MIT OCW offers educational materials from 33 academic disciplines and all five of MIT's schools.

Most of these "classes" require the purchase of an expensive textbook, paying academic prices, and many of the them are little more than class notes posted in pdf form.

They need to do a lot more work on the content before it's a real aid.

3. Which if you want to get anything out of it...
You would need anyway. And the textbooks are copyrighted material, so I don't see the problem.

5. They could post pdfs of prior editions of textbooks
Many of these textbooks come out with a new edition of textbook every 2 years. They could post pdfs of older versions of textbooks. That wouldn't effect the sales of current versions of texts.

4. As Martha said, It's a good thing
For someone who doesn't have the time to commit to a formal program this is a good thing.
