...the neighbor across the street told me that they have been dumping the sludge from their grease traps out the back door, which has been flowing down to the street, and running the entire length of my street. My tires on the passenger side are coated with rancid grease. So are the tires of everyone else parking on the street. The Fire Department arrived a few minutes ago. The Haz Mat team is on the way. The restaurant owners will be cited.

Fucking PEOPLE. It's all one big game of "here's what I need to do, fuck everyone else, fuck the consequences. I'll just dump this rancid smelling shit in the STREET."

1. People with bio-diesel converted cars can run off old kitchen grease.

Get them to list in Craig's list. People who can use it, search for restaurants who give it away. Maybe I read it wrong; they are dumping the solids into the street? That's just sloppy.

2. Solids and water...it reeks out there right now

I don;t know if they're rinsing the grease traps out or what...it's liquid, but you can see and smell the grease in it and if you;re parked on the street it coats your tires.

It's like one big overflowing toilet, except it's rancid kitchen grease and water. And it's flowed about an eighth of a mile down the street and it's not stopping. Plus today is the day everyone puts their leaves, lawn clippings, etc. out to the curb for pickup tomorrow morning, so this stuff is acting like a sponge.

The grease won't go away by itself or with the rain...the Fire Department is going to have to clean it.

5. I know how nasty it is! Mexican place nearby...

cleans out near the dumpster in back but doesn't get all of it IN the drums meant for the grease goo. So it goes everywhere and stinks. It's really disgusting, especially in the summer!

14. Trap grease is no good for biodiesel without substantial processing.

It pretty much takes an energy-intensive thermal polymerization to make trap grease usable. Biodiesel can be made from used fryer oil, but trap grease is a far different beast.

...one of the firemen walked up to the spot where this stuff was running out to the street and he looked like he walked into a wall...his head visibly snapped back when the smell rose from the street and met his nostrils. It's not just rancid grease, it's...well, maybe I'm better off not knowing the details.

and my dogs like it but the smell is often pretty bad.

But no competition for old grease. Back in my restaurant days one of the punishment duties was emptying the floor traps into the grease bin (which was 15 feet from our building and double boxed).

...I went to the local coin op carwash this morning. They have the big brushes on a handle in addition to the power wash wand. The street cleaners came out as a courtesy last night and cleaned the gutter mess up...there's water this morning but it's probably from the rain last night, nothing more.

These folks certainly didn't make any friends in the neighborhood.

Most make arrangements these days to sell their used fryer oil - a far different thing from the funk found in the grease traps.

17. Again, probably not the trap grease. It is unusable for fuel

due to the solids and the water/waste content. Used fryer oil (brown grease) is a saleable commodity, but trap grease is not. Research is ongoing, but it is not economically feasible to use trap grease for biodiesel at this point.

opened last year in Florida to recycle it.
