1. That's an early Lomax recording
Later renditions by Leadbelly were softened up considerably for concert tours.

I believe Leadbelly's version of The Midnight Special takes the cake in the sad department.

Ol' Leadbelly sure was a font of classic songs. Even with some of the ones that he didn't actually write (Like "The Midnight Special"), his arrangement/performance is the one that every one else since then has followed.
