6. If it's all that important to you, type "Ok," post it,

then click on "Edit" on your reply and edit to your heart's content, or at least for the next 59 minutes. But if it's really honest-to-god no kidding that important to you, you probably should consider seeking professional help.

Edit (see): That sounded mean, and I don't mean to be. Point is that folks who are going to read the thread are going to read the entire thing. Ones at the top that say, "Poopie! Pee!" are going to get skimmed. If you write a longer, better thought out reply that's lower down, it isn't going to be ignored for that reason. It's more likely to be read because it's meatier. So don't worry about it (was all I meant).

7. Sure, it happens to everyone.

But people tend to always read the original message. Follow ups are read in two ways - either all of them (a thread of not exorbitant length, ie. no need to hit "view all", or of such importance or interest that you have to see everything) or to just read those posts that look interesting.

So you have three choices - only join in on threads that are neither important enough nor interesting enough to require clicking "view all" and an investment of time in a busy world or putting something in the subject of your post that is so compelling that everybody wants to check it out. Or you can just introduce original subjects and never answer them - that automatically puts you first.

If just being first poster in a thread is your issue, I suggest you stop replying to posts on DU (or anywhere else) and do something positive about it. For example, you could run for President. Being first would also make you leader of the "free world". Or train for the Olympics. Being first would get you a really cool gold medal and your face would be on the Wheaties box.

Otherwise, well welcome to life. You aren't gonna be first in most of what you do. And most of us are pretty savvy in reading threads. We don't care when you posted as much as what you posted. Being first to post something inane is no great accomplishment. Coming in eighth or 150th is no great failure, especially if your post is intelligent or well written or thought-provoking or funny. People rarely remember where you placed as much as what you said.

But if being first is really what you want - type faster and don't say anything. Skip the text field and just type "Yes" or "No" into the subject field. No is better because it's faster. Best of all, stick to one letter subjects (and of course no text). There may be people here who would respect you for winning the posting race, but most would simply conclude you are either illiterate or too drunk for your own good - so take that advice with a grain of salt.
