They always served grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. That was a good thing. You could fracture someone's skull with those grilled cheese sandwiches. If you didn't soak them in tomato soup, there wasn't a prayer of eating them. Factor in the reality that damn near everyone in elementary school has multiple missing or loose teeth and the situation is even more grim. I'm going to be 48 in a couple of weeks and I STILL eat grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup.

4. Split pea soup and peanuts?
That's a legume festival!
I love toasted English muffins with warm melty peanut butter. Split pea soup, not so much, unless it's that lovely French Canadian Yellow Pea soup. It's made with salt pork which makes all the difference. I actually order a dozen cans of Habitat brand every once in a while, by mail. Which is of course ridiculous because cans of soup are very heavy and I pay through the nose for the delivery. And I think it's completely worth it.

6. Dip a crusty muffin with melted PB into that pea soup, and you will be transformed.

I mean it. I thought it was odd when Mr. Brickbat introduced me to the concept, but the taste is fantastic. I make my own split pea soup and sometimes use smoked hocks, sometimes bacon. It's much more porridgey than canned and very easy to make.

And yes, the legume fest becomes...shall we say...enlivening as the evening progresses...

5. As long as we're talking soop and sammitches....
Cooper Sharp American Cheese makes the best grilled cheese sandwich in the world.
And if you mix Campbell's classic tomato soup with a can of skim milk and then garnish it with creme fraiche and chives/scallions, you got a lunch time gourmet treat.
Thank you for your attention.
