High College Costs Force Students To Work As Strippers, Prostitutes
<snip>

UNIVERSITY students are working as strippers and prostitutes to pay for their higher education.

A survey by Melbourne University lecturer Dr Sarah Lantz found at least 40 struggling students worked in strip clubs, escort agencies and massage parlours.

Their jobs helped pay rising costs of upfront fees, books, research materials, photocopying, food and living expenses.

About one quarter of the 120 women working at the Daily Planet brothel were uni students, earning up to $2000 a week, a staff member told the Herald Sun.

And Maxine's Elite Strippers owner Maxine Fenson said four of her
25 staff were working to pay for a degree.

1. Asia Carrera started that way
and realized it was a boatload of money earning potential.

And even here in the US, stripping is a good way to earn money. One night a week's worth of work is enough. Not a bad deal, really, except dealing with all the icky strip club patrons.

2. You're correct.

I've often wondered though that the danger of taking up those professions is that it makes "straight" jobs look very unappealing.

People who say "I'm just doing it to make ends meet" could easily find themselves hooked on making that kind of money. I imagine there's a life style connected to it also, not to mention making new friends and becoming distanced from one's old ones.

Mmmm, Conan Doyle wrote a Sherlock Holmes story that dealt with this theme, The Man With The Twisted Lip IIRC. A young newspaper reporter did an investigative story on beggars and went undercover as one.

He made a lot of money. Later, he incurred a debt he couldn't readily pay and turned back to that "job" to make some quick cash. Lol, he had an epiphany of sorts and started living a double life.

Ah, fwiw I've known more than my fair share of topless dancers. Hehehe, where I live they are all Teamsters now. :) It's true, the Teamsters organized them as cabaret workers.

3. The bush Administration's Take on this...
...is probably that the guys sitting at the bar in strip clubs are helping the economy.

They take a raw material (beer, bush's favorite soft drink) and manufacture a product (urine).

They are also working on manufacturing a story to tell their wives and girlfriends about where they were and where their money is!
