if a pan of hot water and a pan of cold water are placed into a freezer side by side the hot will freeze faster
but lets get a little science up in here
a pan of 98 degree water and a pan of 40 degree water are placed in a common area and temp is reduced til both freeze
both pans will freeze at the same time once the common area is not warmed by the waters
so the 98 comes down to 0 at essentially the same time the 40 does the same
one way to see it is they froze together
another is to say one lost more temp in less time so it "froze faster"
water is very interesting stuff
it expands when frozen

By the way, hot water does not freeze faster than cold water (except under very specific conditions, in which case it still doesn't, not really, except from a certain somewhat disingenuous point of view). It's an urban myth.

I think the bigger factor is that, in order to see the (Mpemba) effect, you have to control a lot of different conditions; in other words, it happens only under very specific scircumstances. 99.99% of the time, cold water will freeze faster than hot water.
