3. I was thinking about cyclomic fields earlier today. Does that make me a bad person? |
|
More precisely, I was wondering whether there was a really simple proof that primes of the form p = 12*n + 11 factor over the integers in the 12th cyclotomic field, which led me to the question: Given a prime of the form p = 12*n + 11, is it always possible to find integers r and s with r^2 - 3*s^2 = 2*p? I was asking myself this because factoring I found the factorization (3 - x - x^2 + 3 x^3)*(3 + x - x^2 - 3 x^3) = 11 (where x is a primitive 12th root of unity) by first solving r^2 - 3*s^2 = 0 (mod 11), but I couldn't solve r^2 - 3*s^2 = 11, though I could solve r^2 - 3*s^2 = 22. Similarly, I didn't solve find solutions of r^2 - 3*s^2 = 23 or r^2 - 3*s^2 = 47, though I did find solutions of r^2 - 3*s^2 = 2*23 and r^2 - 3*s^2 = 2*47, which should enable me to factor 23 and 47 the same way I factored 11 -- that is, by assuming unique prime factorization, which I think is known for the integers of the 12th cyclotomic field

Fortunately, the 12th cyclotomic field is one of those fields whose ring of integers has unique factorization.

8. The integers are frickin badly designed! I mean, why couldn't we find (say) the nth |
|
prime just by multiplying all the previous primes and adding one? It would be a helluva lot more convenient. And why can't ALL the cyclotomic fields have rings of integers with unique factorization? It's sloppy workmanship, that's what it is!
Somebody really ought to complain to the mathematical management about stuff like that. I mean, really! Who had the dumb idea that it should be impossible to turn 3-space into a commutative field? Physics would be easier if we could do that ...
Oh, don't get me started!

12. They tried that in Universe 1.0. |

But mathematicians complained. It turned out that the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem actually did fit in that margin. The Goldbach Conjecture became Goldbach's Obvious Theorem. And the Riemann Hypothesis was solved by most junior high students. So in the upgrade, they made the primes less predictable, more chaotic. More FUN!
