Castle fans: does this show ever get exciting?
I have a routine where I immerse myself in a show and try to watch it all in a couple of viewings. I've done this for a couple of shows, including the last one, Leverage, which I found very much to my liking. Now, I'm watching the show, Castle. Except I'm only up to episode 5, first season, and I'm bored silly.

I don't feel very excited. I fell asleep with one of them, and at the ending, my first thoughts were: is it over? Did anything happen?

I'm not sure the show is worth it right now. I know some shows take a while to "find" their audience, but I'm afraid I don't care much about the characters, the episodes so far, or, well....anything.

I've heard some people find the characters of interest, and I know Fillion has a good amount of testosterone, but really I think I'd be asleep if his character was as boring as he lets on so far.

Even comparing the show with Leverage, I'm amazed. In my mind, Leverage has characters worth thinking about, and the shows are clever, and memorable. Castle covers little new ground. For shows based in New York, there are CSI: NY, Law and Order, and Law and Order: SVU, and a host of others, especially through the years.

Sorry if I sound like I'm just bitching, but I want some reassurance that the show is worth watching, or if I should move on to another show, which will most likely be White Collar, Warehouse 13, or something along that line, which can be found somewhere online to watch.

1. I think the show is more about humor and romance
I like the chemistry between the two leads and the funny bits with the supporting cast, especially the two male detectives. To me, the show is more of a throwback to romance/caper series like "McMillan and Wife" or "Hart to Hart".

2. More like "Moonlight," "Bones," or "Moonlighting," where...
the big question isn't the crime or whatever of the week, but when will they get together.

Curiously, all those "Thin Man" derivatives like "Hart to Hart" need the chemistry of married life, but where they aren't already a couple, hooking up, or more, kills the show. Go figure.

3. Ah. So the answer to my general question
is no, it doesn't get any more "exciting" than it is. ;)

In that case, I will move on to something a little more dramatic.

Personally, I honestly don't see a lot of chemistry between the characters. Obviously, I've only seen 5 episodes now, but to me it appears that Castle (the character) has far more chemistry with the actress who plays his daughter, and Susan Sullivan as his mom. If I were to lay down relationships in the series, those three relate (in more ways) to each other, and is like a coterie which doesn't want to be broken into. The first time I saw them in the first show, it looked, to me, that they were husband and wife, because they were hanging together and talking about adult things.

For me, I love characters. They make or break a show. If the characters are compelling, I'll watch the shows. I don't care very much for comedies (sitcoms) or reality shows, but beyond that, things are fairly open. But if a show is about romance, and not about the casework of a police detective, they still need to make some effort to make things a little more exciting. A show like Bones carries far more weight as a show with that kind of episode. There is a "goal" in each episode that is compelling, and there is an actual chemistry between David Boreanaz and Emily Deshanel. Regardless of that attraction, the show doesn't forget that it's a "whodunit" and they need to find the culprit in any case and avoid circumstances that form the climax.

Ah well, I think I will move on. So many shows, so little time!

4. I love the show and think it is a throwback to the
late 1930's rapidfire dialogue movies. That stuff is eternally fun, never gets old.
