1. I was snowed in for four consecutive days

I had no phone. Almost no food. No heat. I just laid on the sofa wearing sweats, wrapped in a blanket and listening to a collection of LP records that was not my personal taste in music.

I kind of dozed on and off the whole time and envisioned what I wanted out of life. That was a great experience I would not change even if I could. My life went off on a completely different trajectory from that point forward and I credit a lot of it to having four days of bored silence in which to really think about what kind of person I would become.

6. Being stuck at home for 2 weeks during the Red River Flood of '09.

I wasn't trapped at home, of course, but everything was closed and a quarter of town was evacuated, so there was nothing to do. That was then I got interested in making constructed languages to pass the time!
