Hey! You Kids Get Off My Lawn! Department
So, I went out to take the recycling to the curb, and found this sidewalk art next to my driveway:

I'm not sure how the local kids got my first name, but they're out in force this Spring. I thought it would cheer everyone in the Lounge up. It sure worked for me!

1. How sweet-That is really saying something about you
I had a favorite neighbor when I was a kid, I did stuff like for her.

2. Yeah...the neighborhood kids stop and chat with me a lot.
I was out working on my boat the other day, and I had three kids "helping" me the whole time. Their help consisted of endless questions about what I was doing. I answer all of them. I picked up the kids and sat them on the seats in the boat so they could pretend they were out on the boat.

My wife and I have our draperies open in our big living room window, and we keep an eye on the kids when they're out playing. Their parents know that, and are happy that someone's watching.

I'm the bike fixer guy, and the bug identifier and all that sort of thing, too.

4. I'm a crusty old fart, but I like the neighborhood kids.
There was an old fart in my neighborhood back in the '50s who would always do that kind of stuff, and I remember him fondly. I guess I'm just passing it along.

Of course, all that stuff always comes with a little grown-up advice and some education, too. It's part of the deal.

10. I've always thought that. There were several unrelated adults
in the town where I grew up who were kind to me as a kid and taught me things. Just passing along the tradition, I guess.

13. Ooh, me too. One of my favorite neighborhood "mentors" recently
passed away and I noticed her lovely home for sale. They had pics of the interior of her house that I remembered so well. If I had the money I'd snap it up tomorrow. Jersey or not ...

8. Your reply is all the recommendation I need.
Well...that and the sidewalk art.

A surprise for the kids may be coming from the local newspaper, the Saint Paul Pioneer Press. I'm a regular contributor to their Bulletin Board feature. It's a page of reader stories that appears daily and is very popular. I just submitted the photo of this with a brief story. All of my submissions get printed. So, one of these days soon, the kids' artwork will show up in the paper. I don't even know if their parents subscribe, but they'll all find a copy on their porch.

11. Them whippersnappers didn't call you sir!
Just kidding. Very nice gesture! You must be a good influence on the community for neighborhood kids to care enough to write that.
