In the court of public opinion, it fits with Nixon faction, but also the entire Vietnam intelligence types, or even soldiers.
There was many shows that came out to repair reputation of army after Vietnam.
I would also guess that show told stories of real life events in metaphor. Many TV shows are 'historical documents' from a point of view.
Some becuase some believe in temporal lore, some becuase they fear that someday someone will scrub the records, and want to get there views out to other generations somehow, and some just becuase they want to tell the stories of many people never told.
But anyways, many tv stories are based on some views of some real events.
The real question is, why was one character named Murdoch, one named Face, and another named Hannibal, and BA Barracus I think was Mr.T. So that is interesting also.
They were against Rome, but not sure which Rome, in some form.
And Nixon opened door to china, so that explains Face.
And some like totalitarian system China has.
but it is a long story with much conjecture, someone should make a tv show out of it so I can understand exactly how it fits in :)
The Murdoch part is bothersome, the Fox person Murdoch doesn't even speak crazy from what I can tell. Unless it is the idea of pretending to be a Far righter to support the left.
