1. I have a Dyson

not sure what model, but I've had it for like 6 years now and it's still going strong. Every vacuum I had before this one seemed to last me somewhere around a year. I also saved money by getting a refurbished Dyson, as they're normally pretty expensive.

6. Dyson is the only vacuum cleaner I'll ever buy in the future. 6 years here too.

I'm still amazed at how well it works. Sometimes I even vacuum fireplace ashes out of the fireplace (only when I KNOW they're not hot, like DAYS later) and it doesn't affect the suction.

33. Dyson Animal

I've had it for at least 6 years. Changed the filters (didn't know they had filters..) Before I got it, my daughter had to vacuum or I did with a full face mask on. I have life-threatening asthma and am allergic to everything except maple trees and feathers. I can now vacuum the house myself. We bought the duster attachment. Works better those expensive dusting cloths.

because it didn't suck up the dirt, but blew it out. Unfortunately, I had lost the sales slip and couldn't return it. So I gave it to my daughter-in-law. Somehow she got it to work.

39. They suck well, but are poorly designed.

The belt slips off if you even look at it funny. To make matters worse, the piece that covers the belt is screwed on, rather than being held on with clips. So, one has to grab a screw driver, and take off 5 screws to access the belt. What a pain in the ass! My vacuum is several years old, and if they make any improvements on the belt situation, I will not replace this one with another Dirt Devil when the time comes.

15. I've had a Kenmore upright that's worked great for 7 years but finding the bags is a PITA.

Have to go back to Sears where I bought it. Even the smaller Sears Appliance store much closer to me didn't carry them and the bag designations/models don't match up with anything I see in any other stores.

very low mileage LOL

I like it a lot except for the handle for the wand and other attachments is made like a damn gas station nozzle and it is too big for its purpose. I do way more "detail" cleaning than floor vacuuming, that is why I wanted a canister with several hand tools. Not that I ACTUALLY do much of ANY cleaning, but when I do it is mostly sucking the dust and spiderwebs off of the knick-knacks.

that works fine, but we no longer have carpet except for the 'puter room/spare bedroom
On impulse I got a $25 Eureka "Quickup" light vac a couple of weeks ago at that-store-which-is-not-in-favor-around-here :hide:
OK, I needed Orange Glo for the wood floors and it's the only place close by I can get it

31. Nice thing about a Shop-Vac for the home is

the power
a smaller hose will fit in it for those easy to handle small attachments
it will suck cat hair off of anything
no bag issues to deal with.

I stopped using "household" vacs after I tried the shop-vac.

Caveat: we have no carpet. We have very flat area rugs, works fine on those.

The last thing we needed was carpeting when we had up to eight dogs. And a Shop=Vac comes in handy for plumbing problems too. Sucks that water right up.

One of the selling points when I bought the house was half the floors are rather crappy old tile type, perfect for the dogs. Wet muddy paw prints, no problem.

The nice wooden floors in the bedrooms are off limits to the beasties, tho.

fantastic way to suck up the incredible amounts of cat fur that float around this place. And the litter that the little lovely children fling all over.

27. Dyson DC14 Animal and an Oreck.

We have both because of my bad back, the Oreck is easier to push around. IMO the Dyson has much better suction but performs better on carpet than hardwood and tile (which is most of our house), but the Oreck really shines in getting pet hair out of carpet fibers (and is so easy to use on hard surfaces). We love the hose feature of the Dyson and use that around all the corners and under furniture, etc.

We didn't buy both at once, obviously (they are rather pricey). We've had the Dyson Animal w/attachments since it first came out and picked up the Oreck about two years ago when Costco began selling a basic model. I love the fact that the Dyson can be taken completely apart, cleaned up as if almost new and put back together rather easily by the consumer. It was definitely made by an engineer (which my husband loves).

Edited to add the Dyson model number--we've had it since 2004 (family 6 with 3 dogs, 2 cats).

I have Hoovers in all of them, including my own house. Uprights and canisters. My canister is 20+ years old and I love it. One client had an Orreck and hated it. When one of my clients got new carpeting, they were warned not to buy a Dyson because it would ruin the carpet because it was too powerful. We just recently spent $200+ dollars repairing a Hoover Windtunnel because it was a better vac than any of the new ones offered.

Just my 2 pennies.

32. Dyson, will never get any other brand

I bought my latest one about a year ago - it's got this ball-type thingy which makes it easier to steer. It sucks up stuff like you would not believe. Expensive, but worth every cent. I have 6 indoor cats, and until recently, 5 indoor boys. (I DID let them out occasionally for school and such-like activities.) The Dysons I've had - 2 over the past 10 years - have handled every single thing thrown at em (except the time when my 12-year-old tried to vacuum up a bundle full of popsicle sticks), but that was quickly fixed.

Highly recommend the Dyson.

gotta give it props, its an awesome vac. Granted you may not have time, but watch for sales. I got mine really cheap on a holiday sale, plus I got it in promo colors which I find much less obnoxious than the usual color choice available.

My parents some years back bought a Kirby from a door to door salesman. Much heavier, and while I generally approve of the durability of metal, It is not/was not as good a vac as the Dyson.

Same thing for the cleaning company I worked for. We always scavenged vacs from places we were cleaning out and occasionally bought one. Over time we had just about every kind except the really high end stuff. It all breaks down under heavy use eventually. But everyone fought to get the Dyson when we had one, because they work and they are easy to use.

From the 70's. "Harvest Gold" color. Returned the Oreck I bought for several hundred dollars and went with this one. Bought locally for $35.00. Wouldn't trade it for anything! You can still get some good deals on ebay....search either "vintage' or "old" in front of Hoover.
