DU Moms: Did you have an amnio? Did it hurt?
Were you scared? How long did it take?

I'm having mine done this afternoon. My husband and I are leaving in about an hour. I HATE needles. When I was in the hospital over the summer I had to have a shot in the stomach every day and I cried every time. I'm mildly freaked out.

At the same time, I'm very excited to find out the sex of the baby, and I'm going to be VERY glad to find out (I hope and pray) that the baby has the right number of chromosomes and that everything is okay.

But I am very afraid that I won't be able to hold still because needles freak me out so much. I think they should strap me down.

:scared:

How was you experience?

1. I didn't but my friend did.
She said it wasn't painful. They used the ultrasound to see where the baby was so they would know where to stick and she said it was just not a big deal. This is my 47-year-old friend who I held the crying towel for during the whole pregnancy. Baby turns a year old this month and all is well and happy now.

17. So much happens during pregnancy and in any case
you are hyper to begin with just being pregnant! Emotions can be amplified, to say the least.

It's so good you're talking about feeling scared and getting that out of your system. If you find that you're more agitated as time goes on, consider cutting down on watching TV (all the doom, gloom and violence) and just relaxing and reading something light.

The amnio is really an easy procedure and I honestly did not have any pain (and also do not like needles!).

20. The doctor and nurse were awesome!
And so was my husband. It did hurt, and I was scared, but it only took about 10 seconds and everyone was very patient and understanding with me.

3. Congratulations!!
I didn't know you were pregnant!!! Admittedly, I haven't been around much! When are you due??

I wish I had some words of advice, but I never had an amnio. I know they're done often though, so I would try not to be too worried about it. Just think, when they're done, you'll know more about your baby and how healthy he/she is :)

Again, Congratulations!!!!!!!

9. Thanks.
I'm due September 16th. And actually, I haven't been around that much either. I've been going to bed early and working a lot. Got to save money!

4. It's gonna be okay. Think really big bee sting.
The "discomfort" is only for a moment...plus you get to see little rbnyc kicking and waving around. I promise, that will keep your mind off of it. I'll be thinking positive thoughts for you. No worries. Let us know how it goes.

10. Thanks.
My husband missed my last 2 visits to the OB, so he hasn't seen how BIG little rbnyc is now. So that will be really great. I'll just try to focus on my sweeties. I will let you know how it goes.

5. Just wanted to say
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 12:36 PM by Chitown_Dem
best wishes to you. I'm sorry that I can't offer any feedback - when I had my baby I was just shy of the age requirement for amnio, so I elected not to have one.

I wanted to find out my baby's sex before birth too. I know some people like to be surprised but I *had* to know. ;)

Anyway, good luck to you - and congratulations.

11. Yep, I'm the have-to-know type.
I'm very excited to find out. We already have a name if it's a girl, but we haven't thought about boys names at all. If it's a boy we'll have to get to brainstorming.

Thanks.

6. I didn't have an amnio
but I did have an epidural and by that time you will overcome your fear of needles.

Good luck and have a fun time finding out the sex of the little one.

Do you feel like it is a girl or boy?

When I found out I was pregnant I immediately thought it was a boy. And I kind of like that cause I was afraid of having to deal with a teenage daughter. Anyways everyone i knew and didn't know kept telling me that I looked like I was having a girl. They had me convinced. And I was trying to come to terms with it and when we went in for the sonogram.... It was a boy! I was so shocked just because everyone I knew was telling me that I was having a girl.... trust your instincts.

Jonas turned 4 months last week and is such a doll baby.

Good luck!

13. I've had 2 dreams...
...where someone gave me an It's-a-Boy balloon. I'm actually hoping for a girl, but of course most of all I'm hoping for a healthy baby.

My husband and father-in-law are sure it's a boy.

Jonas is a beautiful name.

Thnaks.

15. Good luck
Whenever I undergo something I dread I have two tricks that seem to work. Either I pinch myself on some other part of my body and concentrate on that or I store up as many details of what's going on as if I was going to write a report about it later and that takes my mind off of it.

THen there's always just letting out a stream of &^#%$%@. :hi:
