Poll question: Who's your favorite Jazz Saxophonist? #2 |
|
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 12:54 PM by ChavezSpeakstheTruth
I will combine Poll 1 & 2 and have a showdown between the winners.
I'll keep a separate tally for Kenny G votes
Before you vote other and ask "where's so and so" make sure you've seen both polls

Miles Shorter, Solo Shorter, or Weather Report Shorter?
I am going with Miles. One of Miles's chief strengths is the bands he led.

I knew it. I missed seeing Blakey because he was hospitalized just days before a scheduled concert. He died shortly thereafter. :-(

19. I saw him, late '80s I guess, w/ the cats right after Blanchard/Harrison |

I think they may have been the first ensemble not to get a record deal, but I hope I'm wrong (about them not getting the record deal that is). Art played really, really, really loud, even in his 70s. And of course brilliantly, majestically, polyrhythmically, all that.
Was in Philly, can't remember the venue.

Grant's Tomb sometime in the 80s. His sax players at the time were Branford and Bobby Watson. I was sitting on the running board of the band's truck behind the stage between Arthur Taylor and Charlie Persip. We were sharing a *libation.* It was a great moment.

Try to find "Gee Babay Ain't I Good To You" that he recorded with Buddy Rich. Both of them sing on it. It's wonderfully surreal. Buddy's voice reminds me of Sinatra.
