Is "Boom Boom, Out Go the Lights" REALLY as violently misogynistic as |
|
I think it is?
Does anybody know the story on this? I'm not that hip into Pat Travers info, so I could be wrong, but it seems to me that lyrically, that song is pretty disgusting.
A related question: did Pat Travers ever have any other hits, or is he one of those acts that gets mentioned a lot, but not really heard all that much?

1. I've heard the song, but never really paid attention to the lyrics. |
|
Maybe you could post them, and we could have a look-see?

3. Oops! I've just been hearing that tune for so long I forget that maybe not everybody else has! |
|
Which kind of speaks to the "part II" of my OP!
"BOOM BOOM, OUT GO THE LIGHTS as performed by Pat Travers
No kiddin' I'm ready to fight I've been lookin' for my baby all night If I get her in my sight Boom boom! RIGHT HERE! Out go the lights!
No kiddin' I'm ready to go When I find her boy don't you know If I get her in my sight Boom boom! WHAT IS IT? Out go the lights!
I thought I treat my baby fair I just found out she don't want me here If I get her in my sight Boom boom! COME ON! Out go the lights!
- solo -
I never felt this mad before When I just found out she don't want me no more If I get her in my sight Boom boom! COME ON! Out go the lights!
No kiddin' I'm ready to fight I've been lookin' for my baby all night If I get her in my sight Boom boom! ONE MORE! Out go the lights!
Take it home!!"

I don't think it's misogynistic. Like a lot of blues tunes, it's more about frustration. Kinda like life. :)
Travers had a string of popular tunes in the late 70's & early 80's.
1976 "Makes No Difference" (promo single to debut album) 1976 "Stop And Smile" 1977 "Stevie" 1977 "Rock & Roll Susie" 1977 "Gettin' Betta" 1977 "Life In London" 1978 "Heat In The Street" 1978 "Go All Night" 1979 "Boom, Boom (Out Go The Lights) – Live!" (UK single) 1980 "Is This Love" (US single) 1980 "Snortin' Whiskey" (US single) 1980 "Evie" (Holland only single) 1980 "Crash And Burn" 1980 "(Your Love) Can't Be Right" 1981 "My Life Is On The Line" 1981 "New Age Music" 1982 "I La La La Love You" 1982 "Rockin'" 1982 "I'd Rather See You Dead" 1984 "Women On The Edge Of Love" 1984 "Killer"
Edited for dates. bbm

"Boom Boom, Out Go the Lights" is more a vehicle for audience participation and guitar shreddery.

5. Me and my sis were in high school when that song was popular. |
|
I thought the speaker in the song was going to kill the woman.
My sister chuckled, winked, and looked at me in that way she knew how and said, "That ain't what it's about."

7. Perhaps, but if so it's no worse than a lot of other old blues standards... |
|
Think of Robert Johnson's ".32-20 Blues" or Mississippi John Hurt's "Nobody's Dirty Business" - gonna-shoot-my-baby kind of stuff.

8. Rock too. Hey Joe, Down By The River are two off the top of my head. |
|
Still being done Eminem and Rihanna just did a pretty gritty tune. Love the Way You Lie http://youtu.be/ZGT6AKt3eYM

9. And country. Johnny Cash may have one of the most graphic... |

Delia's Gone
Delia, oh, Delia Delia all my life If I hadn't have shot poor Delia I'd have had her for my wife Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone
I went up to Memphis and I met Delia there Found her in her parlor And I tied to her chair Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone
She was low down and trifling And she was cold and mean Kind of evil make me want to Grab my sub machine Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone
First time I shot her I shot her in the side Hard to watch her suffer But with the second shot she died Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone
But jailer, oh, jailer Jailer, I can't sleep 'Cause all around my bedside I hear the patter of Delia's feet Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone
So if you woman's devilish, you can let her run Or you can bring her down and do her Like Delia got done Delia's gone, one more round Delia's gone
But that's just the tip of the iceberg. The murder ballad is a common theme in both country and blues, and with those genres as its main antecedents, rock is the same.

10. Frankie and Johnny were lovers. |

Stagger Lee.
"Frankie" is a girl's name you don't see anymore. Frankie Carter Randolph started the Harriss County Democrats.
