Put anything NEW in front of a cat, and they lock in on it like the TERMINATOR.
Just finished a bag of microwave popcorn that I'd been eating out of a stainless steel bowl with a plastic lid. Put the lid on the bowl and set it on the floor in front of my bookcase so I'd remember to wash it out later. The cat saw it and it was like a bird landed on the rug...her neck snapped around and she just stared at it for a few seconds. Later, after she thinks I've forgotten about it, she'll be down there inspecting it...the little varmint.

:-)

1. Except for mylar balloons. My cats just had scary experience with
mylar balloons. They were shiny, they were in the house and they were MOVING. My cats are babies.

2. One of my most highly-recommended books is "Catwatching" by Desmond Morris.

You can get NEW copies of the original hardcover book (the one I own) from "Amazon Resellers" starting at three dollars.

I've had GREAT luck ordering "new" hardcovers from "used" booksellers on Amazon...got one just the other day and the internal pages were bright white, there wasn't a mark on the dust jacket, and it cost me three bucks (for a first edition 1994 hardcover).

http://www.amazon.com/Catwatching-Desmond-Morris/dp/0517565188/

The reason I bring it up is that Morris asserts that cats never evolve mentally past the stage of adolescents, and that they see their human owners as their biological mothers.

In my cat's case, that certainly seems to be true. She always cries for attention, and if she doesn't get it, she walks up and starts whacking me and crying some more until I give her what she wants (usually a brushing...this cat wants to be brushed an average of six times a day).

3. My little Izzie is like that. I got them when they were very young (should
have been with their mother). Izzie cannot sleep unless she is up under my chin with her paw on my face. She loves to be held and typically can be found draped on my shoulder. I love it...even when it's driving me bat poo crazy. :)

Her sister, Bella, is a bit more autonomous.

14. I brought in a couple of mylar balloons the other day.
OMG! Freak out city. The cats, when they entered the livingroom at all, nearly broke their necks keeping an eye on them so as not to be attacked by the strange shiny things 10' feet above them.

I finally had to banish the balloons to my office. The good news is, I've learned how to keep the cats out of my office.
