Have you ever severed a digit? |
|
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 03:12 PM by m-jean03
When I was seventeen, the tops of the first three fingers on my left hand experienced the cold, sharp slice of a chef's blade. At my first "real" job (dishwasher.) Prepping potatoes for soup. Finger tops stayed on, but were dangling!
I am proud to say, I didn't faint. I couldn't watch for more than a few seconds, however, when they were sewn back on. I had a massive amount of local anesthetic in my hand, so I couldn't feel a thing. It was pretty strange, all that blood pouring out of the stitches, but no pain.
Your gruesome stories?

Happily I've got all the body parts I'm supposed to have. No real gruesome tales.
I busted my head on a radiator when I was 2, but I don't remember much. I still have the scar, though.

When I was 4 or 5, my friend climbed up on the porch railing and knocked a clay pot on my head. LOTS of blood. I have a scar, I think, but I have too much hair up there to see it.:-)

But my cat fell from above my head and tried to stop himself on my lips and shoulder... almost went clean through my lip, that was fun. :)

5. I whacked off 1/4" of my left thumb while traunching fish. |
|
Most of it grew back, though...with a faint 'dimple.'
The knife was sharp and the fish was cold. Hardly knew it happened when it did.

6. this is gross . . . back in the sixties |
|
when I was in college and playing Hearts 24/7s in the student lounge, one of the guys who always played cards with us showed up with his finger heavily bandaged. He said--calmly! and with what might even be described as glee!--that he had just chopped off his ring finger, with the ring on, and mailed it to his ex-girlfriend, who had apparently just broken up with him.
I will never forget that, how disturbed that seemed, but I cannot for the life of me remember the immediate aftermath. Only that I never saw him again after that.

8. "French-bread thumb" - an insidious social malady in the 'burbs. |

It happens mostly at dinner parties after drinking too much and accidentally cutting your thumb or other digit instead of the French bread.

15. Nope, but I put a hole in top lip |
|
I was 5, just ready to go to Kindergarten. I flipped over the handlebars of my bike, caught something and tore a hole in my face - just above the lip and below the nose.
Got home, cleaned up a bit, my face was just a mass of meat. I still recall the sound of my mother hitting the floor in a dead faint as I said, "look, Mom, I can put my finger through my lip".
A very skilled general practitioner put me back together to the point where within two or three years you couldn't see a thing. I WAS the only boy in my Kindergarten class with a mustache, though. Stitches looked like a 'stache.

in a punch press 35 years ago. It took out most of the nail bed, and now the nail grows thick and distorted. If I don't keep it well manicured, I can scare kids with it! Couldn't play guitar for a couple months (A real tragedy at that point in my life), so I stopped working in factories after that.

I nearly severed my thumb in an old-fashioned metal-bladed fan. It caught me just a fraction of an inch below the joint; if it had been at the joint it would have been completely severed. It was cut so severely it grossed out the ER doc at a Level 4 Trauma Center. I had 14 stitches put in, and a week later I had surgery reattach the nerves. That was at least 8 years ago, and I still don't have full range of motion in it and the tendon has a very noticeable dent.

It didn't really hurt at first. Only after the blood started dripping on my shoes, did I notice the pain.
I still have no feeling in the tip of my finger.
