XMen2 question -- why did Jean choose to die in the flood?

She's coming back.

From the way they changed the story around (and, to be honest, the story in the comics was changed around a bunch of times, too), she apparently was starting to get in touch with something a bit bigger than she was ready to handle.

Her innate power is much stronger than she realises, and it's starting to come out, in other words. She's not prepared for that. She was scared that she would end up killing her friends if she stayed on the plane and attempted to save them, so she had to do it from a safe distance.

Notice the faint outline of a bird on the water's surface at the very end of the film? That's a phoenix, the bird that rises from the ashes.
