Poll question: Yes I am Nerd (Part 4) |
|
If you were suddenly sucked through a portal into Dungeons and Dragons (any campaign setting), then transformed into any race you wanted (repleat with all appropriate knowledge etc.) however you would keep just enough of you to appreciate it... which race would you be a part of?
*Planetouched are people whose distant ancestors were beings from other planes of existance (e.g. the elemental planes, astral, heavens, hells, whatever)

10. I am not familiar with any D&D or AD&D post second-generation |
|
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 01:50 PM by Rabrrrrrr
and even the second generation, not very familiar with it. We moved over into Rolemaster about 1989, and then I moved away from my friends and so haven't even gamed much in the last 12 years.
I think it's cool to hear that there's actually a Mind Flayer option for characters!

Terrific system imo. I bought all the books, but I could never get a campaign going. Too complicated for a novice GM like me and no one else wanted to try. The RM campaign I attempted failed miserably:(.
As for my race, I've always played half-elves or elves. I love the versatilty. Fighter/Thieves :yourock:!

13. Once we moved into Rolemaster, we left D&D behind |
|
and we'd been serious AD&D freaks (starting way back with Basic D&D, right before AD&D came out) for a decade or more.
Rolemaster had much more of the flexibility we had always demanded and changed the AD&D rules to fit, since we'd always found AD&D to be somewhat unrealistic, and too limiting in weird ways, especially in terms of the way that magic is done in AD&D which none of us ever liked.
Rolemaster opened it all up for us, and it really isn't that much more complicated than anything else, and once you're into it you'll realize it's actually easier and more streamlined, especially given the extraordinary amount of flexibility and coherence it has.

14. Character creation was great. |
|
But we could never get past navigating through all the combat tables. Or maybe I was just a crappy GM. Always preferred being a PC.

18. That's the really interesting thing.. |
|
about 3rd(3.5) edition D&D. You can play *anything*. It is now directly built into the system to play all the monsters.
Obviously some race choices are less than desirable.... (I'm playing a giant slug..yay!)

23. Yee hah! I'm a Yellow Mold! |
|
I'm gonna play a gelatinous cube! Hey, wait, how do I carry my treasure? Hey, guys - wait! wait!! Oh, crap, I can't even speak!
That is pretty cool to be able to play monsters. We always allowed way back in the time, but for the most part the monsters aren't very fun to play anyway. Though perhaps if the entire band were monsters - all giants, say, or all mind flayers, etc., it might work better.
But we all really enjoyed hanging out in towns and raising hells. In fact, one town we stayed in felt the need to pass a law banning bows and arrows from saloons. :-) Those were the days. Many a saloon we set on fire as well. Ah, to be chaotic neutral/evil again. God, we had fun. I had a Paladin once that, while I liked him, just didn't fit into our style of play so I lost my Paladinhood in a glroious evening of opium induced sex with a pub owner's daughter, in his own pub. The pub we were staying at.

6. Thats why I put it as (half) |
|
Since Orcs and Elves are the only Half races you will find. (Outside of Teplates, but I wasn't counting that cause then we get into level adjustments and power-gaming, plus theres the whole munchkin factor...)
I just assumed if you wanted to be an elf or half elf that one option would be good enough. :P

9. But it is distinctly different, elf and half-elf |
|
I wouldn't be so keen on being a half-elf, though I have played them, but if I were magically transported into that realm I would want to be pure elf.

I liked playing humans in D&D, because when contrasted with all the elves and dwarves and halflings everyone else always played, a human turned out to be pretty exotic.

In most of our games humans were a dominant force, because from a purely power-gaming standpoint, they are incredibly strong in D&D. They get an extra feat and they get extra skill points.
Which, compared to minor statistical bonuses, is very strong.
My best characters have always been human. That's not to say I didn't love my orc characters I have had. However my human characters would beat the snot out of my orc characters.

15. Ah, I played an earlier edition. |
|
I played with the tan, pre AD&D books. No feats back then. Humans then were really just an "average" species. Other species had a combination fof pluses and minuses that supposedly made them different, yet equal.
My favorite character was a halfling thief, who I retired because he just got to the point that nothing was a challenge anymore.

17. There are tons of different kinds. |
|
For instance, there are some called Tieflings who are basically just humans, but somewhere in their family tree there was a lower-planar being (i.e. a devil or demon) and so the eventual tiefling seems human, however there is something "not quite right" about them, maybe it is a hint of sulfer in the air, maybe their eyes are red or maybe they have small horns.
D&D has been quite good at coming up with dozens of permutations of the above concept.
