that is to say that they suffer from a form of psychosis in that they are are disconnected from reality, or that they "see" or believe-in things that aren't really there.

Unfortunately, the word psychotic is a bit too harsh sounding to describe just one of the many subtle degrees of intensity that one can be disconnected from reality.
