Poll question: DU PC gamers. What is the all-time greatest CRPG?
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 02:35 PM by JaySherman
Not counting Everquest and the MMPG's. Only straight-up single-player RPG's.

My all-time best is Baldur's Gate. The first CRPG that actually made me feel like I was in an actual tabletop campaign. I could play those games over and over and never get bored. The storyline was brilliant.

Betrayal at Krondor was a great game too. Way ahead of it's time.

1. Wasteland? Ragnarok?
Damn, Ragnarok was an awesome game. More ideas and gameplay than about ten of today's games put together. Of course all these are old, because my days of buying computer games are in the past, I'm afraid.

2. Pool of Radiance
was an awesome game back in the mid 80s. That was really the game that got me hooked on computer games in general, I think. The whole "Gold Box" series was good.

Of those on the list, I think Planescape: Torment is the best; really great writing.

9. Pool of Radiance!
The same thing with us. We used to play it on our LaserIII Apple clone.
Now we play Balders Gate alot.

3. Neverwinter Nights
Neverwinter Nights was really the D&D 3E combat engine with a complete "dungeon" construction kit. The release was never about the included adventure, although it's good gaming, too.

There's so much Neverwinter Nights content on the web now, it sick. Thousands of hours of gaming without ever doing the same thing twice.

4. Wasteland & The Fallout Series

5. Morrowind III
Is the only RPG I've ever played through more than once (I don't count all the time I spent slashing my way through Diablo II on-line). In fact, I've played it through 3 times--two of them with all of the expansion packs. There, I guess I'm not too proud to admit my occassional nerdliness--but, of course, that was all before my son was born. Much less time on the comp now, though I'm not complaining.

6. I preferred Betrayal at Antara to Krondor, but for the crash at the end
(Did anybody actually get to play this game through? I don't mean anybody on DU, I mean anybody!)

I'm currently obsessing over Morrowind, and would give it top honors except for the frustrating lags. These are of course mostly my fault for trying to play it on an inadequate system, but I can't help but think that Bethesda could do a better job of coding for compatibility with slightly older systems. I didn't have problems with Civ3, for example, which is newer (or at least my copy, the Game of the Year Edition, is).

Baldur's Gate never really did anything for me. I liked the Fallouts better, but they all share a problem with Morrowind: a very depressing pallette. I think game designers should realize that their prime market is largely comprised of total depressives already, and that maybe they would be a little closer to heaven if they would maybe introduce primary colors now and then. Just a thought.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura was extremely delightful. My interest sort of petered out by the time I got close to the ending (and I discovered DU at that time), but it gave me a lot of fun during the month I wasted on it. (Of course, this is another pallette dominated by browns and grays.)

I think Diablo is classed as an adventure game rather than an RPG, but I might be wrong. I only had a demo and was completely terrified by it. Loved, I mean really loved, the music though.

8. other
The German "Das schwarze Auge" series. I think they were translated to English (Realms of Arkadia), but without knowledge of the underlying tabletop system and it's vast universe, I don't see how one could really enjoy the games. The maker of those games made Planescape as well, btw.

Other PC RPGs I liked were Morrowind and the Ultima Series (especially Underworld I+II and Ultima VII 1+2 and IX).
