PINK FLOYD fans: How come no one ever talks about THE FINAL CUT? |
|
I think it is a solid album that was unfairly skimmed over, due to the fact that it was the follow-up to THE WALL. Since it was the last record made with Roger Waters, essentially it was the last real PINK FLOYD album.

From what I understood, it was composed of cuttings from "The Wall", which I didn't like either.

I'm listening to The Wall right now... It's not my favorite album, but definitely in the top 10

3. The only good song was the title track. |
|
Coming from someone who loves Floyd, the rest flat out sucked.

7. because it's really a Waters solo album |
|
With token appearances by Gilmour and Mason for a few minutes. Hell, Andy Newmark is the main drummer on most cuts (as he was on official Waters solo albums later). It also suffers from the absence of Richard Wright, who had enough of Waters's insufferable pomposity. Wright helped create that Floyd atmosphere that is sorely lacking here.
I like the album, but it doesn't have the balance of the earlier efforts. It's all about Waters. The politics are great, but his incessant smug cynicism weighs it down, so it's often stilted and lifeless musically. I am rather cynical myself, but less melodramatic I guess.
It's good, but not great, Floyd. Or as I say, a decent Waters album with the Pink Floyd name tacked on for contractual obligation. I think he fared better on "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" which threw some absurd humor into the usual pathos.

10. Waters was in a hurry to break up Floyd |
|
His fighting with Gilmour had gotten out of hand, and Wright left in disgust. I always felt "The Final Cut" was a pun on Waters's part, and a pro-Waters friend of mine and I used to argue (we were in 10th grade when the album was new - a new PF album was an EVENT back then) if it was Floyd's final album. I said it was, and he said no way. When Waters put out a solo album the following year, it seems I was vindicated. Even when Gilmour put out "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" under the PF name 4 years later, the absence of Waters and his subsequent lawsuit attempt allowed us to call it a draw. Waters WANTED his album to be Floyd's final cut, and it would have been if he had gotten his way.
I am one of those annoying Floyd fans who loves the post-Waters stuff nearly as much as the Barrett or Waters era stuff, so my opinion on "The Final Cut" isn't based on pickiness, just relativity. There isn't a Floyd album I am not willing to discuss or defend.
If asked about my faves on "The Final Cut", I would go with "Southampton Dock", "Two Suns In The Sunset", and "Not Now John", that one mainly because Gilmour gets to solo, one of the reasons I love Floyd right there.

8. The Final Cut does not suck, not at all |
|
I think it's a wonderful album. I don't listen to it very often, because it's also terribly depressing, but that doesn't detract from it being a great album. And it's AOR--it's meant to be heard as a whole.
The album could've been written yesterday, could've been based on the Bush Administration. Of course, young George was still snorting coke and chasing tail when the album came out, but it could've been written about his presidency. Check out The Fletcher Memorial. I particularly like The Gunner's Dream too, and Southampton Dock.
Anyway, for those who think the album is no good, or a rehash of The Wall, give it another listen. It's worthwhile.
-From a guy who mostly listens to jazz these days, but still has an appreciation for GOOD albums of whatever genre.
