My English teacher was handing out what she called "Easter candy" at the end of class on Friday, and me, being a Jew, was temped to ask if Easter candy was kosher. And I'm sure it can be. But since it's related to a Christian holiday, can it ever be?

1. Sure it can - doesn't matter what it's called, |
|
so long as it is made in a kosher way (or since it's candy, and not meat, not made in a non-kosher way).
Prety much all candy is kosher, because it's pretty rare for candy to use any ingredients that are specifically and always unkosher, or that need to be handled in a kosher way.

2. It's kosher if it doesn't contain any forbidden ingredients. |
|
When they wrote the rules nobody had anything to do with Easter. However, there were concerns about becoming involved with rutual food items from other faiths. I'm not sure then, actually. I doubt they're specifically forbidden, but they might fall under some of the old regulations as well.

3. Forget Kosher, I would never except candy from a teacher |
|
I know that 95 % of teachers are good people, but you never know when you might be getting bad candy.
But to answer your question, I don't think easter candy would conflict with your Jewish beliefs or rituals. I mean candy is candy, as long as you look at like that. Just say to yourself you are eating candy, not that you are eating easter candy.

4. Interesting question... |
|
I'm not a Jew, but I don't recall seeing anything in Leviticus about making/consuming sweet stuff.
What about sweets made with milk .... like fugde and milk chocolate for instance?

6. If the candy is wrapped and kosher it will |
|
have a "Hecsher" or symbol indicating rabbinical supervision. There will be a U inside a circle, a K inside a circle, or another Hebrew letter or symbol. If the candy is loose and unwrapped there is no way of knowing. If it is gooey or jelly like in texture it probably is not kosher. It would most likely contain gelatin which is made from the bone marrow of an animal not slaughtered in accordance with Jewish law. I hope that helps.

10. Nah, I was just kidding |
|
But since no one seems to know what Peeps are made of, they are best avoided. :) Kosher FAQ: http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/rfcj/kosherfaq.htm

12. Doesn't it have to be blessed by a rabbi? |
|
Or the plant has to be at some time. My potential new plant makes Kosher products, stuff that would be normally Kosher anyway. My potential new boss said that the rabbi comes once a year though and blesses the plant so that the food can be sold as Kosher. I thought to myself: Wow, I might get to work in a blessed place as opposed to sursed like my current plant seems to be.

15. I once got asked if I was willing to go to Christmas parties, or eat |
|
Easter Eggs. I answered, "Hey, you go to birthday parties when it's not your birthday, and eat wedding cake even though you're single, right?" (I'm about as non-observant as they come, but anyway.)
Beyond that -- marshmallows aren't usually kosher, so Peeps are probably out. Look for the sign everywhere else.
