Creepy Emergency Vet says my Siamese Cat has Psycho Motor Siezure!
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 08:26 PM by KoKo01
My regular vet wasn't on duty and I went with the "founder of the practice," because my male cat KoKo (yes, that's my DU user name) was completely "out of control" running from room to room, scratching up furniture, exhibiting signs of rage and otherwise "totally outta control behavior, jumping on his sister cat and biting her until she cried. He's always been the nicest of the two Siamese and very loving and my "pal."

I work from my house (do research for our business, so am on computer all the time, which is why I post on DU so much) BUT....ANYWAY....my cat all of a sudden exhibited really bad behavior, which seemed to occur when I started my morning off hitting DU before I do my daily research.

I couldn't deal with his behavior because he was making ME psycho.

Vet says "In the Spring we see cats having PsychoMotorSiezures" and you just need to give him a pill every day for 60 days and then call me back and tell me how it went!

I thought this guy was a JERK. First of all, he looked just like James Carvil with glasses and shaved head and he didn't do a thorough exam of KoKo before he wanted to put him on drugs and diagnosed him as a "psycho."

He's NOT my regular vet, but I took the prescription, but will never subject my poor KoKo to a "pill a day for 60 days" to contol what this vet said was a "Spring Thing" that we see in cats for "unknown reasons." I felt this vet was a "pill pusher." KoKo is a "foamer" and for those of you who understand that means you "give a pill" and kitty "foams it out of his/her mouth." So, pills don't work because kitty has eliminated it. 60 Days of this would have my kitty and me at it and probably have him dead because he wouldn't trust me anymore.

I didn't fill the prescription, because of this, but I think this vet was a "sicko" and wish I'd seen my regular one.

Am I doing the wrong thing by not giving my kitty these pills? Or, was I correct that this vet didn't know what the hell he was talking about?

Have any others of you had dealing with PsychoMotorSeizure Syndrom which occurs in Cats "only in the Spring" of the year?

Thanks!

1. I'd see another vet
for a second opinion.

Don't trust any vet completely........I just learned that...

Our Border Collie Misty had to be put down a week ago Thursday and I'm still suspicous of the vet who initially examined her in November of last year.

Sorry to go biographical on you but I think a second opinion is in order.

2. I had a Siamese Cat do the same thing.
All of a sudden one evening the cat went completely crazy. He was running from room to room, howling, and throwing himself against the walls. He was totally out of control. After awhile, he started chasing his own tail and biting at it.

We took him to the emergency vet and the vet didn't have any idea what was wrong with him. They bandaged up his tail, gave us one of those cone things to put around his head so he couldn't bite his tail, and give him some tranquilizers. The medication just made the poor little guy sleep all the time, but without he was going crazy. We finally had to have the cats tail amputated, he had damaged it so much and he just wouldn't leave it alone.

Strangely enough, he seemed to mellow after that. This happened when he was only a couple of years old, he lived to be 18 and never had another episode like that again. A couple of times he would wander and howl and I would worry if he was going to freak out again, but he didn't. He was a real pal and my buddy.

I can't remember if it was in the spring that this happened, but we did keep him on the meds for awhile, the only alternative would have been to put him down.

You will just have to judge your cats behavior. At least you have the meds just in case he needs them. Check with your regular vet as soon as you can too, a second or so opinion is always a good thing.

Good Luck.

3. Isn't there a full moon today?
I posted on another thread that my gentle, lovable cat bit my leg tonight. Maybe the moon is having an effect on our beasties this evening!

4. Thanks to all of you who replied. The vet said it happens in the "Spring"

these "Psycho" episodes. He didn't seem to want to address why my ll year old cat would suddenly just turn psycho THIS Spring and why his sister didn't. But, I did get the feeling there must be some research out there about this...or else vet thought "I" was just an "overly concerned parent of pet???"

I do know that these two really like the sun, and hate cold weather. They are Southern cats and these cold gloomy days we've been having here in NC do seem to have gotten them very "down."

My last Siamese grew up in Connecticut and was born there. He didn't seem to go through anything, because he wasn't used to much sun. Go figure?

Maybe they have "Sad's?" And just need more Sun?

What I did since I posted last night, was to give him much love and attention. I've spoken to him more and tried to single him out from his sister for more luvies. So far today, I haven't seen an episode. But, I'm worried about when I go "back to work tomorrow" and am on the computer. So, I will watch to see if it's related to that, before I start to "pill push" drugs down his mouth.

I think I will get a "second opionion" as was suggested here. The Vet bothered me, and I just don't see "drugging my kitty" until I get some more input into this...

Thanks for the encouragement, here. :-)'s
