And Mezcal is known as the cheap shit in Mexico - why is it more expensive in the US to buy Mezcal than Tequila?

and FYI there are grades of mescal just like any other product in the universe

tequila got popular here and like good old fashioned capitalism is prone to do, suppliers started supplying more of it. that = lower prices (and not to mention more variety - including inferior crap)
