How are bananas still 52 cents a pound? |
|
I used to reset stores back in the late 90's and I remember bananas being 52 cents a pound. At the same store today they are 52 cents a pound. HOW CAN THAT BE?

3. Bananas are typically used as a produce section loss-leader. |

Cobbed-corn as well. Sell it with very little markup (both have about a 48hr. shelf-life so you want them to move fast anyways) and hope that people buying corn and bananas see that the mangoes, tomatoes and haricot look yummy today.
The downside of that is that banana harvesters tend to be extremely poor and uneducated and easily replaced so they get squeezed on pay to keep that price down. You pay for cheap corn in the form of subsidies.

If they have brown spots, I can get them for about 20 cents/lb or less - that's when I stock up and dehydrate them for chips. I can make a 6 month supply that way for a few bucks - unfortunately I then eat the 6 month supply in about 2 weeks.

Our local Aldi sells them for 39 cents/lb. When they start getting brown spots, they're reduced to 39 cents/bunch. They are around 69 cents/lb. everywhere else, and half that if overripe. The little finger bananas run 99 cents/lb. or so.
