Why local produce rocks
I live in Detroit. A week ago yesterday I bought some red leaf lettuce at Detroit's Eastern Market from a place called Rising Pheasant Farms (http://risingpheasantfarms.blogspot.com) - two bunches, $2.

(Why is the name of the farm plural? Heck if I know, but let's just put a pin in that and move on...)

Today, I came across that lettuce -- which I was told had been grown about a mile from where I bought it and picked only an hour earlier. That lettuce had sat in my fridge for eight days because, well, I had forgotten all about it. I was bummed that I had not eaten it and was prepared to throw out a bag of gooey lettuce slime. But...

WOW... that lettuce was not only still good -- it was great. It was at least as fresh as anything I would have gotten had I decided to run out to my local Kroger. I blissfully made a nice salad for the family with it. Yummy!

1. I just picked a big bunch of lettuce from my garden.
It tastes so much better than that junk in the plastic bags that goes bad in 2 days. It's easy to grow if even if you only have a small spot to garden.

It keeps in the fridge for quite a while! Enjoy! :)

2. You can't beat local for freshness, food value and it's greener for many reasons. I only wish...

There was more available in town, because the trucked in, or FFS, flown in from other countries, produce is just on the verge of going bad and you have to eat it quick. Glad you have the option so close!
