RIP Rob Grill of The Grassroots
In my opinion, a great, and underrated band:

From oneoclockradio.com

Rob Grill passed away last night. Here is a statement from his wife, Nancy Grill.

My dear husband Robert Frank Grill, 67, of Mt Dora, Fl passed away peacefully in my arms at 11:37 a.m. (EST), while listening to one of his favorite songs…”Let’s Live for Today.” He loved his fans and he loved The Grass Roots! Thank you for all of your prayers, love and support during this time.
Nancy Grill

2. Another man done gone...
...another piece of my youth.

Saw Rob on the Monkees' (minus Nesmith) "That Was Then, This Is Now" tour, at Marine World (while it was still on the Redwood City / Belmont border, before moving to Vallejo), in 1986.

It was basically Dolenz, Tork & Jones with a backup band that supported the other acts..."Herman's Hermits" (only original member was "Lek" Leckenby"), "Gary Puckett & The Union Gap" (Gary Puckett with the Monkees' backup band), and "The Grass Roots" (Grill with the Monkees' band).

Reviewers later write...accurately...that Grill looked the healthiest out of anyone on stage (he was tanned and wore an all-white "Don the Beachcomber" kind of cotton shirt and pants thing).

But he phoned in his performance. He did perform "Live for Today" and "Midnight Confessions" and a couple of other Grass Roots hits, but he also let the audience do far too much of the singing, and just seemed to be there in order to collect a paycheck.

I have no idea what he's been doing since 1986, unless it was more of those oldies package tours.

But back in the day, the Grass Roots were a part of the sonic landscape, getting as much airplay as The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, or any other "first string" acts.

R.I.P., Rob.

4. RIP, Rob
You brightened my teenage and early 20's years.

Thanks for the memories.

LET'S LIVE FOR TODAY
Grass Roots

When I think of all the worries people seem to find
And how they're in a hurry to complicate their mind
By chasing after money and dreams that can't come true
I'm glad that we are different, we've better things to do
May others plan their future, I'm busy lovin' you (1-2-3-4)
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
And don't worry 'bout tomorrow, hey, hey, hey
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
Live for today
We were never meant to worry the way that people do
And I don't need to hurry as long as I'm with you
We'll take it nice and easy and use my simple plan
You'll be my lovin' woman, I'll be your lovin' man
We'll take the most from living, have pleasure while we can (2-3-4)
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
And don't worry 'bout tomorrow, hey, hey, hey
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
Live for today
Baby, I need to feel you inside of me
I got to feel you deep inside of me
Baby please come close to me
I got to have you now, please, please, please
Gimme some-a lovin', gimme some-a lovin'
Gimme some-a lovin', gimme some-a lovin'
Baby gimme some-a lovin'
Gimme some-a lovin, I need all your lovin'
Gimme some-a lovin, I need all your lovin'
Give me some love, now
I need all your lovin'
Sha la la la la la
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today
And don't worry 'bout tomorrow, hey, hey, hey
Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today.

8. I'd heard a few days ago that Rob was not doing well
Safe passage, Rob. Your music made my teenybopper days much happier.

(And I LOVED it when you smashed that cake right in the face of that awful smelly groupie woman who wouldn't go away... you know who I mean!)
