4. My dog is very excited when he sees a cat.
But I have a feeling he does not have good intentions. The only time he's gotten close to one there was barking and hissing and the cat ended up at the top of a tall fir tree. Now my dog barks at cats who are inside of houses and they make all kinds of unfriendly gestures at him. Its like they are preparing for a war.

5. Unadulterated jealousy.
Cats rule. Dogs drool. People train dogs. Cats train humans.

7. my border collie and my cats don't think too highly of each other
The dog could kill the cats. And I think they know it. We are usually at wary detente, with an occasional fuss. The dog always stops just short of grabbing one.

8. When my dog was still with us, he and my kittie got along quite well. The
cat would swat at him, he was a cocker, and the cats claws would get caught in the curls at the end of his ears and he would drag the cat along as if nothing was there. The cat was always swatting at him from hidden spots but he never drew blood. They also liked to tear up papers together. Christmas morning was a hoot.

9. Reactions vary from one dog to the next.
I have one dog whose reaction is curiosity: she seems to think that they are dogs too. My other dog is terrified: something about the way they move freaks him out.

11. My old dog was large and he was quite afraid of cats.
The cat in the apartment below ours would be "put out" at night, and I would take my dog down the back stairwell for a walk. He would not walk past this cat unless I were between him and the cat because she would hiss at him. He was at least 5 times her size, and she never hurt him, but he acted like the cowardly lion.

We stayed at a friends house and they had 2 Maine coon cats. The male came up to him and laid down nose to nose, and swatted him on the side of his nose, just to let him know who was in charge in this house. My dog was rather submissive, and he just whined. I was rather amazed that an animal so much larger would just go along with this.

However, I am pretty sure my current dog would not be so submissive to a cat... and he would probably be quite bewildered by a friendly cat.

15. I knew one dog who was absolutely terrified of them.
But he was a Papillon, no bigger than a cat, and cats regularly kicked his butt. They'd give him wedgies and stuff him in his locker, so to speak.
