I realize these are suppose to be really good books and well done movies but - just not for me.

Who else is with me?

1. Almost. I saw the first movie and REALLY hoped it was a case of "the book was better".
It just wasn't all that impressive, and it certainly didn't live up to the hype.

25. Same.
The only good thing to come out of HP is Emma Watson is really cute. Beyond that...meh.

1 movie, 1 book...and I knew I was done.

2. I've seen the movies (other than the most recent one)
but I've never read any of the books. Not that I wouldn't like them, I know I would. I'm just waiting until I'm done writing my own books before I do that :)

That would be me. Although I certainly won't criticize the books or films in any way, I have less than zero inclination to read or see one...

40. Even though your username suggests you're a Narnia fan?
I loved the Narnia books when I was little, but when I reread them as an adult, I found the story and characters and world setting still awesome--but the Christian allegory was too heavy-handed, and the sexism and racism completely UGH-making. Greater awareness ruined pretty much all the books for me except maybe 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader,' and that only because I love ships.

For me, the Harry Potter series has a whole lot of everything I loved about the Narnia books as a kid, with nothing of the shit that made me feel betrayed later--probably because I read them first as an adult, so I was never culturally clueless enough to be sucked in by manipulative allegory. I've known all along what the themes were really about...and even knowing that, it was still an amazing, beautiful, powerful ride I wouldn't trade for anything.

I'm a 42-year-old woman who bawled her eyes out when she first read 'Deathly Hallows' when the book came out, and did so again at the movie last week. Because that emotional payoff was EARNED, and JK Rowling never manipulated her child readers as crudely as C S Lewis did.

41. Blah blah yadda yadda
I've read all the Narnia series and the HP series, multiple times, and I think the latter is superior in terms of complexity and emotional depth.

7. I saw a big chunk of the wizard olympics one...
...when all the kids were over. It was oh so very bad.

But other than that, my only interest in this whole phenomenop was that the books really got the kids interested in reading. They loved it. For me, it's just a kid's story.

9. Nope, none, never (and a side note)
Have you ever noticed how many people like to give a book importance based on how many pages it has? This is not just a Harry Potter thing. (Ayn Rand, the Bible, etc?)

quantity matters more than quality?

I've seen a few of the movies, but never really got into them (I did it more because friends wanted to see the movies).

Don't have any desire to read the books, fantasy is just not the genre for me.

But I am happy others enjoy it as long as I don't have to read it or watch it.

I saw part of the first movie and read part of the first book. It didn't interest me and I don't think the book is well written. The author got dang lucky by having her book hit in the right place at the right time.

And I feel like I must be missing out on something really great, because they are so popular. But that still doesn't motivate me to get one of the books. Maybe someday I'll sit down and try watching the movies, but I'm in no hurry...

29. I started reading the first book
It was pretty good, only got about 50 or so pages into it, then got distracted by something else and never went back to it. There's so many other things to read though, it's not at the top of my list to finish.

In part, I'm driven away by the disclaimer--found in nearly every discussion of the series--that "it's really not a kids' story really!"

43. I have seen a few minutes of the first movie.
The only fantasy books I ever really enjoyed at all were written by the late great Roger Zelazny who tended to ground his stories with a healthy dose of realism.

I will probably watch the movies. I may even read the books someday. At least it seems to be free of all that fairy tale golly gee crap that made Tolkien unbearable.
