A prominent New Jersey rabbi and his wife surrendered Monday on charges of kidnapping and threatening the life of an Israeli man if he didn't agree to grant his wife a Jewish divorce.

David Wax, 49, and Judy Wax, 47, were released on $500,000 bond each after appearing in U.S. federal court.

The victim is not named in court documents, but The Associated Press identifies him as Yisrael Briskman.

Briskman was lured to the couple's Lakewood home in October, according to the FBI, then handcuffed, blindfolded and robbed. David Wax is accused of kicking Briskman in the ribs and threatening to bury him alive if the Jewish divorce, or get, was not granted.
