ñ - OMZ!1 Why didn't anybody *tell* me about "MS Character Map"?!1
Edited on Sat Jul-23-11 05:34 PM by UTUSN
á Á é É í Í ó Ó Ó ú Ú Ñ ñ

ONE little thing about MS that Mac-Linus users can't put down!1

I've Searched many times before for ways to get these accented, um, CHARACTERS, and couldn't get those number codes things to work, and recently found this site that lets you type in that other language with keyboard containing the accented characters. http://spanish.typeit.org/

But just now in the Gawker gossip site, somebody had adorned their comment with a musical note thing and somebody asked them how they did that, and the answer was MS Character Map, and there it's been all this time, from System Tools to Accessories to Character Map.

It's a little cumbersome: You're typing, then get to a place that needs the accent, so you have to go to the Character Map (which you can have to the side in the back so it sticks out where you can bring it to the front with a click, then you Select the accented letter, then you have to Copy it, then go back to your typing place and Paste it. Plus, this whole deal goes by the menu of whatever Font you want to use. In my favored Courier New I don't see the upside down exclamation and question marks, so will have to dig around to see which font has all of the things that are needed in one place.

Or another way, avoiding going to the Map/Select/Copy/Paste way, keep ALL of the letters in your Clipboard ready for Pasting into your document: á Á é É í Í ó Ó Ó ú Ú Ñ ñ Then Paste it ALL where you need ONE letter and Delete/erase all the ones you don’t need.

Hmmm, the keyboard website might still be the easier way.

2. Ah, but that it would but it doesn't (work here)...
Print screen and include in a discussion board post would be really useful, but it hasn't been worked out yet, that I know of.

If ever I find a way I will tell you!

:hi:

4. I'm not sure if I know what you're looking for but Awesome Screenshot
is a browser addition that works in Chrome & Safari (I'm on a pc) that lets you copy visable or the full page with a click. It opens up to allow you to annotate the selection as well and then save, or use their service to upload.

3. You can save it as a GIF, then put it in Photobucket,
then paste it in your discussion post.

5. Yes, Mac users can put that down
In the right-hand side of your menu bar are a bunch of little icons--mine has Bluetooth connectivity, auto-backup, monitors, network, sound, keyboard and battery status. Pull down the keyboard menu and you'll find the Keyboard viewer. Ask for that and you'll get a little layout of your Mac's keyboard. It will show you the symbols available with whatever modifier keys (shift, option or option-shift) you've got held down right now.

If you want to type a ö, you press the Option key and the umlaut will be on the U key. It's orange, which means you have to push another key after it. So...Option-U to turn on the umlaut, and O to put an umlauted o down.

Which is easier: having a whole slew of letters in your clipboard that you paste into the file then delete all but one of when you need an accented character, or just typing it? (BTW, most Mac people who use accented characters have memorized the keystroke for the accents they use.)

6. It's pretty useful. I have a *.doc file that I keep open.
It contains DU HTML codes, the Alt+ (four number) codes to do things like é, º,½, ¢, and ³, and some other symbols I can copy-and-paste like ⅞, ≈, and ≠

7. I use my word-processing software
And then use the Insert > Symbol function. It's also handy for adding dingbats to a post:
