36 Tombstones
Now removed from my ignore list.

Apparently I really didn't miss much of anything by censoring that commentary.

Now I check my list!

3. heh
I've only had one person on mine and s/he was put there a long time ago. heh, I kind of thought they would dis-appear when they got the pizza but I guess we have to do it manually. I wonder how long ago it was served... ehh, who cares :D

4. Thing is
I really have only one standard to determine whether or not to add someone to that list: Would I want to host them over drinks or dinner in my home and would they mix and mingle well there in a diverse group?

In other words: can they be tolerant and openminded and play nice with others? can they disagree without being disagreeable?

I was thinking about completely clearing that ignore list and starting over from scratch. Now I'm not so sure.

5. "I was thinking about completely clearing that ignore list and starting over from scratch."
I do that once a year, right after New Year's day generally, because hope springs eternal.

I encourage others to give it a shot and participate in the Annual Ignore Jubilee.

But this may be a blank message, so who knows?

7. Yes you are
While I make liberal use of my ignore list I have not banished anyone there permanently. Like others here, I clear it out periodically.

I really wish the ignore feature had greater functionality. I'd like to be able to link a post or make a notation and have it show a date when I placed someone on the list.

Would you prefer that I see a blank message?

8. I dont believe in using ignore at all
It's against my religion.

I even seek out opinions that are opposite of my own from time to time. And I even try to understand why some people are intentionally disruptive.

The most common conclusion that I have about people like that is that they're idiots who are driving by an obsession to inflict their idiocy on others.

I look at that as a challenge… One that I believe that I can win with reason and logic.

9. I don't use ignore either, but I am not as understanding as you are.
I also want to see opposite opinions, and that is why I don't use the feature. However, I don't try to understand why these people do what they do. I might go insane if I figure it out.

10. So you won't go into the Mouth of Madness as it were
That's all cool.

I look at it as a test of my ability to look at things objectively.

If ever I feel that I'm not up to the task, I know how to pull out.

14. I practice censorship
I don't watch graphic violence or other media that I consider offensive. I don't watch Faux News or listen to right wing commentators. I avoid fundamentalists of all varieties. And a wide variety of salespeople as well.

I believe that everyone has a right to say what they want in the public forum - but I don't believe that I am obligated to listen to it all.

I view my discussions here as an exchange of ideas. I don't feel compelled to convert others to my viewpoint. But I expect those I dialogue with to respect my views - even if they do not understand them or agree with me. I simply do not see my discussions as adversarial - and I prefer to resist efforts to make them so.

My views on certain issues - notably single payer and gay marriage - have changed as a result of my discusions here. But those changes have come over time and not as a result of any single discussion thread.

The ignore list is a tool to put time and space between a difficult exchange - a time-out that can diffuse tensions on both sides.

18. I have five people on ignore.
Three have been there since the primaries. I didn't care for the personal attacks.

The other two are simply annoying. I have a feeling that many other people have them on ignore, too.

When I check back, I usually find that one or two of those have been tombstoned.
