Kind of a strange superhero type in the book. Maybe a little on the criminal superhero side.

I grew up with the Universal / Claude Rains version. As one critic aptly put it, "too much opera, not enough phantom."
The Herbert Lom / Hammer Films version was basically just like any other Hammer film...atmosphere, killings, the end.
There was a ridiculous "Freddy Kreuger" (Robert Englund) version that sucked.
I don;t know how close the Lon Chaney Sr. version is to the book but it is still my all-time favorite.
And the Andrew Lloyd Weber version wasn't half bad when I saw it live in San Francisco, but I didn't care for the DVD at all.
There are other versions, not worth mentioning...I guess the powers that be must consider a version faithful to the book to not be "marketable."
