i hate to throw out an area rug...any suggestions
Edited on Sun Jul-24-11 08:45 PM by MrsBrady
It's starting to get frayed around the edges
it has a "cleaning stain" where my husband thought it was ok to use carpet cleaner on a dog poop stain :eyes:

I could take it out in the back yard to clean it laying it flat, etc...but
it will still have that bleached looking stain and the edges are messing up.

it's not a high dollar rug...probably cost me about 300 to have it cleaned, in which case I could just buy a new one.
but it's not like i have an extra 300 lying around anyway. My aunt gave it to me after she bought her a new one.

it's printed on one side, so it's not an expensive rug with the threads woven in or anything like that.
it's wool or hemp looking or something.

:-(

just sux

1. Die it maybe?
Then find some nice twine and do a blanket stitch around the edges.

That is, if you're trying to re-furbish the thing.

2. If you moved out of the area...technically...it would no longer be an "area" rug.
It would be faced with a moral imperative...live a sham of an existence or do the honorable thing and simply leave.

So that's what I'd do.

I'd move, wait for the area rug to move to another area where it could resume an honorable life as a legitimate "area" rug, and then you move back in.

I can't see that costing $300.

Glad I could help.

:-)

11. As a rug I am sure you feel empathy for other rugs.
And don't take the dyeing option lightly.

5. maybe
it could go in the garage under the car or basement if your laundry area is there to cushion the cement or cut to line the trunk of your car as liner?

8. ohhh...camping rug?
it's big, but maybe I could take it to a folk festival I go to.
we camp, but i'd really call it more like outdoor living for 18 days.

maybe that would work.

6. put a piece of furniture over the stain.
You could rebind the edges, probably.

How big is it?

12. Have a basement? A somewhat-worn rug can dress up a basement area. n/t

13. Donate the rug..there is a program here where I live that...
helps young adults get back on their feet. The floors of the little rooms they'll live in for a while
are linoleum so anything to brighten up their rooms makes it special...Plus you get a tax
write-off.

14. I have thrown many area rugs away because I have three
small dogs that have accidents. I have pee pads everywhere, but they sometimes miss. That's why I buy cheap rugs.

15. Cut it up,
save the salvageable spots and use them as throw rugs. What is stained beyond use could be donated to a local animal shelter.

Depending on how stiff and heavy the rug is and how crafty you are it could be turned into throw pillows, bags, etc.

It was posted upthread about painting it. That's another possibility.

17. But it could be turned into a retro
sort of pillbox hat. Just make the form out of cereal boxes!

18. List it on Craigslist under "free." I'm sure somebody could use it.
I have put old area rugs on my garage floor for insulation (the garage is directly below my house). My PG&E bills are always below $50 here in SF.
