1. More Classic Boris Karloff
From "The Mummy," shot in exquisite German Impressionist style by Karl Laemmele. Jonathan Demme quoted this very shot with Anthony Hopkins in "Silence of the Lambs."

82. "Homage" THAT is the word I was looking for!
The first time I saw TSOTL I immediately recognized that Demme was nodding to "The Mummy" with the way that shot was framed.

And that shot of Karloff scared me badly when I was a kid and saw "The Mummy" for the first time. Far more than anything else in the movie. Deeply creepy...

84. I hate it as a Godzilla movie.
The creature design doesn't bother me, it's just that they removed all the characteristics of Godzilla. No atomic breath, he actually gets hurt by mere missiles...that's no Godzilla! :)

However, if you approach it as a remake of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms it's a watchable giant monster flick. It's just not Godzilla. At all.

There's a fairly long feature on the DVD on how Bottin created the FX.

83. As a Godzilla movie it sucked hard.
If you watch it as a remake of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms it's a decent creature flick. But it makes no sense to get the Godzilla license and then ditch every thing that makes Godzilla Godzilla. Hence the tag GINO, Godzilla In Name Only. :)

I watch it every year around Halloween, and I never get tired of it. No movie evokes paranoia and panic like that one does. And with the added badassery of Kurt Russell, it is indeed just about perfect.

I watch it at least once a year. If I was forced to pick a favorite horror movie (or sci-fi movie, for that matter), this is it. Great story, great acting, great score, and deliciously gooey FX work. What's not to like? :)

It even came with three other Carpenter movies; They Live, The Prince of Darkness, and The Village of the Damned.

None of the three compare to The Thing, but They Live is pretty fun.

113. I picked up a PS3 almost 2 years ago
and when Carpenter's The Thing on Blu-Ray was on sale at Amazon.com, I had to buy it. It looks as if they used a new negative to make it and the colors are extra-vibrant, so it went from being, "Wow, that looks pretty gross" to, "Gah! That's disgusting!" (Thinking of the autopsy scene, in particular.)

It's my favorite horror/sci-fi movie ever, so naturally I applaud your excellent taste, sir. ;)

A prequel that takes place at the Norwegian research station is on its way, too, and comes out in October. This one looks to be more a straight-up action-horror movie, though.

112. You are correct on Nurse Ratched..a monster..
I just want to agree with you on Ratched...That moment when Ratched did her thing at the end of the film..(no I wont tell you what)
, was one of the most horrifying moments in all film. (at least to me)..and is scared in my memory forever. thanks for putting her up. and you are correct....a true monster..

and if you have not seen, "One Who Flew Over the Cookoos Nest" and would like a truly great drama...with outstanding performances..
Jack Nickolson was great too, Lousie Fletcher as the nurse...please watch it..but it is not a comedy..
