Has history been unfair to Wilt Chamberlain? |
|
Bill Russell got all the rings so he gets all the respect, but Wilt's stats were off the charts.
He was clearly the most dominant basketball player ever. He just caught a few bad breaks, like getting psyched out by Frank McGuire's NC via NYC hustlers in the 1957 NCAA championship.
The only thing that makes me think the detractors have a point is that he never fouled out of a game. Once he got four fouls he just quit playing D, at least according to Bill Simmons.
I'm too young to have ever watched him play a full game so I really don't know.
What say you?

11. I always thought 20K was a bit high |
|
Even legendary man-whore Warren Beatty denied the 12,775 some author attributed to him http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/news/theres-no-way-i-have-slept-with-12775-women-claims-beatty-1857766.htmlI can see 10K at most for Wilt.

10. I literally ran into Wilt Chamberlin. |
|
An Italian deli in Santa Monica.
Hot summer day, I was going in, he was coming out. He had no shirt on, he still got service. I realized I was seeing the biggest man I had ever seen, since my eyes were about navel level on him. I arched my neck back, looked way up to his face, saw the goatee, recognized him ...
I also saw his Lamborghini out at Gladstones on the PCH, in Malibu. I had to go stare because I had never seen one before. As I looked in, I was quite surprised. The contour seat for the driver was missing; my assumption is that Chamberlin was too big to fit.
Instead, there were floral sofa cushions leaned against the back bulkhead, and on the floor, looking like they had come from a thrift shop. In a Lamborghini.

13. He was the best basketball player of all time. |
|
While yes he rarely won championships, think how many people on those Celtics teams went on to the Hall of Fame. It's not like every team other than those Wilt Chamberlain played on won championships.
And Bill Simmons is a blithering idiot who should always be assumed to have no idea what he's talking about. You can find more intelligent pet rocks.
