1. "Blues In My Bottle" would be a good place to start.
Here's "Death Bells" from the 1961 album.

4. One of the few he actually wrote.
As with a lot of the early bluesmen, Lightning relied heavily on "traditional" tunes.

Glad you liked it.

5. Go right to pandora.com and set up a Lightning Hopkins "station".

Using the "Music Genome Project", it does an incredible job of providing you with similar artists to the original --
and not just 'recommendations', but a string of music so you can decide for yourself.

"The Music Genome Project®

On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.

Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.

Since we started back in 2000, we've carefully listened to the songs of tens of thousands of different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world."

10. Also LastFM
I prefer LastFM over Pandora primarily for the selection of artists, but for other reasons too, including overall functionality.

I really like Progressive Rock...behind Yes, Genesis, King Crimson & ELP there was a "second wave" of bands like Spock's Beard, Marillion, Flower Kings. And behind THAT was the modern era prog, bands like The Reasoning, Gazpacho, Sylvan, RPWL...and I discovered all of them on LastFM.

Depends on what you like...but if you want to go deep into a genre and really discover NEW stuff, LastFM is the better bet.

6. If I understand you correctly....

...that you like Hopkins and want to find out what other artist(s) fall along these same sorts of musical lines? If so, I would suggest going to Pandora.com and setting up an account. It's free...well, at least for 40 hours per month. (There are the periodic advertisements which crop up from time to time - but not enough to get really annoying, IMO.)

There you can set up a Hopkins *station* and Pandora will automatically spin songs of other artists in that particular genre.

I did that with Snooky Pryor and have been well pleased as to the results!

Hope this helps.

(By the way, do you play any blues? Guitar, piano, harp?)

I've been a big fan of the blues for a long time now. Ever listen to any Little Walter?

On edit: Posts crossed just now with MFM! :-)

11. Can't go wrong with John Lee Hooker
Or Pinetop Perkins
Mississippi John Hurt http://youtu.be/ODykMOkJKZM
Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown
Bobby "Blue" Bland
Otis Rush
Buddy Guy
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Muddy Waters
Willie Dixon
Clark Terry
Carey Bell

BTW, Lightning's best album is Double Blues. Besides Pandora, there's Grooveshark.com. You can listen to more Lightning there.

Pretty soon, you'll be a Blues Hound!
