Really? Green Day? Are you kidding me? Rolling Stone readers pick best Punk Bands of all Time
Edited on Thu Aug-04-11 09:54 AM by LynneSin
Don't get me wrong, I love Green Day but calling them punk is like calling pot a hardcore, highly addictive drug that requires billions of tax dollars spent on curbing its use. And what's funny, if the members of Green Day were to read this poll that would probably laugh their asses off and say the same exact thing - WTF were these people thinking???!!!

:eyes:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/photos/readers-poll-the-best-punk-rock-bands-of-all-time-20110802

If anything this list is a list of the 9 groups that made groups like Green Day even exist in the first place since includes such legendary punk groups like Social Distortion, The Misfits, Black Flag, The Stooges, The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Ramones. Without these bands there would be no Green Day and technically they are considered post-punk since their era came after the golden era of Punk music.

1. I never know the differences when it comes
to these rock genres. I did see SLC Punk but it didn't go too much into their choice of music but I think it is different than Heavy Metal because there was also a heavy metal group to go along with "Mods" and other groups each group rivals.

4. well early Green Day was pretty much punk but what the band is today
it's not even on the Punk bandwagon of anytype. I still love the band, their latter work is some of their most memorable.

But seriously Punk?

And how in the hell did they get the number 1 spot?

6. Black Flag was around 7-8. 2-4 in this order was The Clash, The Ramons and Sex Pistols
Edited on Thu Aug-04-11 10:42 AM by LynneSin
Personally I would have gone with the SP higher since they really ushered in the era but I suspect the Clash got the #2 slot since they had more commericial appeal in the USA. Had Combat Rock, The Clash's most commericial album, had not existed I think the Clash would be further down on the list. And when I mean list I mean the one created by the Readers of Rolling Stone Magazine since they seem to go for more commericial appeal than actually leaders of the genre.

To be fair, the very early albums of Green Day (pre-Dookie) were pretty much defined as punk but no where near the punk you'd get from the other 9 bands on the list.

They're not terrible or anything, but I truly think if not for the film Sid and Nancy they'd be a punk footnote.

Overall, it's not a horrible list though. Good to see Bad Brains make it. Here's some I would have voted for...

Bad Religion
Crass
The Ex
Didjits

30. I suspect they had a bigger influence in the U.K. than here.
American punk was quite different at the time, and very few would trace their roots back to the Sex Pistols. In the U.K. that may be totally different, and they probably did define much the Brit punk scene early on.

But honestly, I know so many people who got into them after the movie that it's not even funny, and I bet if I asked any 10 of them to name more than the song Anarchy in the U.K. they couldn't do it.

Edited on Thu Aug-04-11 02:36 PM by Lindsey
day was definitely punk. And American Idiot (later Greenday)is one of my favorite CD's of all time. They were talking about this on Mark and Brian today and Kelly (a "family member") has exactly the same feelings I do. Greenday has totally evolved into a great band. I guess that's what makes the world go round - right? Every body has such different taste in so many arenas. Right now I'm listening to Amy who I've been listening to since her passing. I get upset that so many people are judgmental and simply don't understand substance abuse.

38. I pretty much agree with what you have to say but they still aren't the best punk band
Most people probably couldn't even name the albums Green Day put out before Dookie, both of which were definately of the punk style.

But if the Sex Pistols or The Clash or The Ramones never existed then Green Day may not have sounded the way they did today.

Green Day is in my top 10 of favorite bands of all time, so I love their music. So I'm not busting on them, just pointing out the obvious.

57. I've got those early Green Day albums...
I had "Kerplunk" on cassette before "Dookie" came out, but I had to buy it on CD when the tape got tangled up in my boom box.
I didn't get "1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" until a few years after "Dookie," however.

"1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" by the way is itself a compilation of a few even earlier albums.

35. I'd opt for The Ramones
because they influenced so many people in England and the US. The SPs were gone before very many people in the US had heard of them. I think you had to be living in late 1970s Britain to really get the Clash when they were a young band.

My favorite bands of the larger punk era were Magazine and Siouxsie and the Banshees, but I have always liked groups on the artier end of the spectrum.

42. Green Day was always a pop band desperately sniffing out "street cred."
When John Mellencamp had a hit with "Pop Singer" he had a live 4th of July broacast in which he change the lyrics from "Never wanted to be no pop singer never wanted to write no pop songs" to "Never wanted to be no pop singer never wanted to write no stupid fucking pop songs."

It went out live over the airwaves before anyone could "bleep" it...I still have the cassette of that show.

Iggy, The Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Clash...they were "punk rock," along with the other bands you named.

Billy Joe Armstrong and Green Day were fucking poseurs, practitioners in writing "stupid fucking pop songs." under the guise of being a "punk" band.

And for the record, THIS MAN was the ORIGINAL "punk rocker."

45. I remember when they were first out, they were considered punk.
And they did that type of music. When I've heard them in later years, I wondered what happened to them--nothing punk-like at all any more. There are a few songs I like, I don't like most of it. It seems more pop than rock. That song that goes "I hope you had the time of your life" annoys the shit out of me.

Hi,
Interesting post, and comments from all. I too love Green Day, saw them twice during American Idiot tour and talk about a fun fun show, but I would not call them "punk". Putting music in genres is always difficult. You mention Social D, which was also on the list, I would characterize them as "pop punk" myself, but I do love them and saw them last summer and they put on a great show.

I was glad to see DK posted by someone. To me back in the day they were a real punk band along with 999. DK - Let's Lynch the Landlord, hahahahahahahahahahahahahha

Peace

58. Green Day concerts appeal to people of all ages
At one point Billie Joe Armstrong will invite one kid up on stage to play his guitar (because let's face it - how hard is it to play 3 chords. The complicated stuff is saved for backup band member Jason White) and then the next minute Armstrong will shove his hand down his pants and simulate masturbation.

Crazy stuff.
