When I was a teen, I couldn't wait to get rid of our black rotary phones and replace them with
cordless ones. And yet, now here I am searching ebay for -- you guessed it -- black Bakelite rotary phones.

Is this a midlife crisis thing or what?

3. That's a Model 302.
Made by Northern Electric, Western Electric's Canadian subsidiary.

Well worth $26.

Mine was made in 1940 by WECo at the Hawthorne works in Chicago. The only thing I regret about cutting the landline was that this wonderful old phone is out of a job...

7. Oh, yeah. That must have been a sad moment in time, giving up that cool phone.

11. Oh, I still have it, along with the Model 701B "Princess" phone.
Just don't have anything to hook them to.

You'd think somebody would come up with an adapter box that would let you use a great old phone interfaced to a cellie. Something with Bluetooth or whatever. I remember there used to be something like that, but I also remember from the reviews that it was pretty much a POS.

6. Wish I could, but I'm conserving all funds until we finish the house. Little expenses keep cropping
up taking us by surprise. That phone could be the grout that we forgot to pick up or something.

4. I've got one. It used to freak my kids' friends out.
They'd ask to use the phone and then they'd stare at it, not knowing where to start.

Then they all got cell phones.

Now I'm the one who stares at a cell phone not knowing where to start.

16. I always thought they were pretty cool myself...we had them growing up
but then again I remember having to get up off my ass to change a channel on the TV with the old Magnavox Floor Set we had ( the one with the turntable and inset speakers ).

20. I have a red one!
But it's plastic, not bakelite. Kind of like this:

I had a yellow one too but like an idiot got rid of it.

My brother had a "retro" room in his basement. After he died, his sons didn't want the phones so they came home with me. :)

21. Those suckers make an awesome defensive weapon, too.
You crown an intruder with a Bakelite phone, they are wicked dense...He's gonna leave
grey matter on something.

Good luck and have super fun decorating the new home.

23. do be careful--your phone line may not support it
if it is a dsl line--not so good
and if you have a phone line from your cable company--no way.

my mother has a rotary on the wall yet.

her internet options are pretty much limited.
if she would want to bundle something for reasonable rates....
