What....I...believe...about Martinis
- The lemon/lime peel is essential. It brings the whole drink together. The brine from the olive, the aromatics of the gin, the dryness of the vermouth. In fact sometimes I throw the peel in the shaker, just to have it a little more present.

- A gibson should be called a gibson martini. It's the same damn drink, just a different garnish (onion.)

- A martini must have gin, otherwise it's another drink. You can have vodka in your martini, but it must contain gin.

- A martini in a non-cocktail glass is not a martini. It's just gin on the rocks or neat.

- "Straight Up" is strained. "On the rocks" is unstrained, ice included. "Neat" is a shot in a shotglass. Get it right, and martinis are always served straight up.

- Less than 1 oz of liquor is not a martini. More than 36 oz of liquor is not a way to go through life.

- A martini is an excellent way to live and sip off of one drink for a while. Unless it gets warm - and you can always re shake and strain to cool it off. If you chill the cocktail glass beforehand, that keeps it ice cold for longer.

- The recipe is thus: 1-2 oz gin, 1/2 oz dry vermouth or less, 1 lemon/lime peel, ice. Shake and serve in a cocktail glass. Serve with olive.

- A "Dirty Martini" is, in fact, a martini. It has all the ingredients but one is 'enhanced.' If you like it salty, try one. Adding a little extra dry vermouth also does some cool things.

- Appletinis, tequinis, berrytinis, chocolatetinis, and other sickly sweet vodka concoctions are not martinis. I'm sure they're all fine drinks, but martinis they are not.

9. Then make a martini like Churchill would have...
That is, make your martini, but instead of using vermouth, look towards Italy.

10. I don't think I've ever had one
But now that I've been educated, I just may try one.

I do like gin and tonic with lime, though. So I'd probably like one.

If I don't have the proper glass, will it still taste the same?

11. Taverner
Although you speak the truth in regard to the martini, this is the same truth that has led you to
other forums on the site. Believe me, I know the power of this, and other sublime concoctions,
and it continues to lead me places I should no longer visit.
