When you took your lunch to school, what was in it. I had a baloney sandwich on brown bread (with |
|
mustard between each of the three slices). An apple, a drink of apple juice and a bran cookie (my grandmother made them - full of spices and raisins ...really good).

Probably peanut butter sandwiches. My strongest recollection of lunch at school was in about 8th grade when they fed us Mystery Meat. This was actually a sort of lumpy, gristly "meat" gravy served over mashed potatoes. There was also some kind of vegetable - overcooked canned peas, I think. And Jell-O.

3. when times were tight, I might get lettuce and mayo... |

...or that Best Foods mayo-relish spread, or maybe even just mustard! No problem -- I was happy no matter what. My mom used to tell of having butter and sugar sandwiches.
My favorite recollection of that period was on cold days when my mom would cook hard-boiled eggs in the morning and slip one in my coat pocket and one in my brother's coat pocket to keep cozy and warm while walking to the school bus.
Which brings up another recollection. If we walked to school, we would pass a little mom/pop store. If I had a nickel, I'd get a whole fresh orange. One time I was riding my bike, and came around the corner of the store and ran directly into a great fat man who was exiting the store. I sorta bounced off.
