Oliver Stone had the best director's run ever ('86-'95)
Check this out:

Salvador
Platoon
Wall Street
Talk Radio
Born on the Fourth of July
JFK
Heaven and Earth
The Doors
Natural Born Killers
Nixon

This run is unparalleled in American cinema. Even better than Scorsese in his prime.

And outside the o.p.'s specs of the Director-role and the time period, 1978, the screenplay (Oscar) for Midnight Express.

And Randy QUAID was in Midnight Express, which I hadn't realized/remembered. He was also great in one of my all time favorites, The Last Detail. Alas, poor Randy these days!1

5. JFK is in my Top 20
He put a lot of meat on that over-gnawed bone.

Colonel X's speech at the Lincoln Memorial was remarkable. Sage Sutherland counseling confused Costner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROqXzHq09IY

Oliver Stone been doin' it since way way back.

8. Don't Know about The Doors, But That Is A Damn Impressive List
The crying shame is that his films, Salvador, Platoon, Wall Street, and Born on the Fourth of July were filled with object lessons that if we had heeded would have prevented Iraq and the financial crisis.
