What did you use to 'sneak' when you were a kid. My mom had no candy or goodies in the house. I was |
|
starved for sugar. There was no candy store nearby. I used to sneak those fizzy vitamin C tablets that you put in a glass of water and then drink when the tablet has disappeared. Only I skipped the water and let the tablet fizz on my tongue.

1. I remember eating a fistful of Aspergum |
|
Who the hell came up with that idea--aspirin in a sugary coating, over a tiny bit of chewing gum? Heck, to kids, it's GUM!
My mom FREAKED. But I never even got sick from it. Couldn't have been that much medicine in each piece.
Our household was the same as yours, AG--no sweets at all. It was easier when we lived nextdoor to my aunt and uncle. My uncle LOVED dessert, so I'd simply eat dinner at home, and then nip across the back yard to see what sort of goodies they had at their house. They never failed to disappoint. Had my first slice of lemon meringue pie at auntie's--I remember that quite clearly. Yum. :9

There was a lake across the street from my house and I would sneak a smoke there, One day, my younger sisters caught me and I had to pay them off not to tell my mother.

5. I snuck a drink of wine from MiddleFingerMomDad's liquor cabinet. |
|
. . . It was an open bottle of sake that he had kept for nostalgic purposes following WWII. 20-25 year old OPENED bottle of rice wine. . . . It was a LONG time before I tried any alcohol other than beer. . . . A VERY long time. . . .

16. Did the same with an open bottle of sloe gin. It was years before I found out that sloe gin was |
|
supposed to be red and not brown. Didn't taste too bad though.

6. Booze from my old man's liquor cabinet |
|
My old man didn't drink much so he never had a very good selection.
Years later he said he bought a bottle of Mescal just to see if my brother and I were crazy enough to drink it.
We were and we did.

Unfortunate name though.

9. They failed because of that name collision. |
|
. . . I remember seeing an interview with their DOOFUS CEO -- who stated and asked, "WE had the name first. Why should WE change?" . . . His son or daughter was undoubtedly responsible for New Coke. . . .

my English grandma said I couldn't live on fish 'n chips but I thought I could - I never got away with it though; the fish shop workers would tell grandma "WE SEE YOUR LITTLE AMERICAN GRANDDAUGHTER ALL THE TIME!" :D

12. My aunt would sent us Salt Water Taffy in a huge box from Atlantic City |
|
Seriously, like 10 lbs worth, all different cool flavors. My mother would hide that box, thinking she could mete it out under her terms, but didn't realize that when her 2 daughters were on a mission, we could find anything. My parents also had this disgusting Manichewitz wine (God knows why, we were never bat-mitzvah-ed) and when I was 12 I took it to school in my lunchbox thermos. I was the most popular kid there, for about 5 minutes till it ran out. Oh, shallow tweens!

13. LOL! did you live at my house?? |
|
Exactly the same thing here. Loved the fizzy vit c's. My mom always noticed though that some were missing.
My mom was ANAL about sweets in the house. As a result, my brother and I would have physical fights at Christmas time over the goodies. Not good. We'd sneak all of the candy canes off of the tree. By Christmas day, there would be one lonely candy cane smack dab in the middle/front position so that it looked like there were still SOME left, lol.
Needles to say, I'm far more relaxed about candy with my kids. Only now I have to hide my 'grown up' candy (ie expensive chocolate) from THEM or it would be gone in a nanosecond. Ah, well. I'll be open about my candy consumption when I'm 90. :)

14. My sister's baby vitamins, and baby aspirin. And phone calls when I was older. |

I must have been smart enough not to kill myself but I loved the taste of those orange flavored aspirin.
And my father didn't let me use the phone much.

19. When my mom and dad spent a week in Bermuda back in the '60s... |
|
Edited on Sun Sep-18-11 09:18 AM by nuxvomica
They left us in the care of my dad's secretary's Aunt Blanche who my folks said was "from the hills". She had a hair lip, a firm hand and a colorful way of speaking. She also made the most amazing chocolate cookies but she would only allow us to eat one after cleaning our plates or doing a chore. My sisters and I frequently conspired to get more cookies out of the jar on top of the fridge. One of us would create a diversion while the other two would quietly move a chair to the fridge and secure as many cookies as they could before Blanche got suspicious. I sometimes wonder whatever became of her and that cookie recipe.

Remember those (in retrospect) unfortunately named chocolate diet candies? My mom used to carry some in her purse, and I'd sneak 'em.
