2. My fourth-grade teacher played the guitar and we would sing "One Tin Soldier," "Soul Cake" and
"Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" She was awesome. She was the first teacher I had who was smart, young and pretty, and she made a huge impression on all of us. Whenever I hear those songs I'm taken right back to her.

5. Buffy Sainte- Marie
On a native American roll.
Universal Soldier, Donovan had a hit with this song but Buffy wrote it. Timeless
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTFnWdOzrMM&feature=related

My favorite Buffy song.
The lyrics on the original LP were different than she sings here. The Uncle Sam line changed, not as powerful IMO.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGaTrsoawlw

"Has a change come about Uncle Sam
Or are you still taking our lands
A treaty forever George Washington signed
He did dear lady, he did dear man
And the treaty's being broken by Kinzua Dam
And what will you do for these ones

17. Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=236Lquwq22A

Revolution in their minds - the children start to march
Against the world in which they have to live
and all the hate that's in their hearts
They're tired of being pushed around
and told just what to do
They'll fight the world until they've won
and love comes flowing through

Children of tomorrow live in the tears that fall today
Will the sun rise up tomorrow bringing peace in any way?
Must the world live in the shadow of atomic fear?
Can they win the fight for peace or will they disappear?

So you children of the world,
listen to what I say
If you want a better place to live in
spread the words today
Show the world that love is still alive
you must be brave
Or you children of today are
Children of the Grave, Yeah!

22. Very cool! All of these are such great meaningful songs. Thankfully they're preserved
for everyone now digitally and will never be forgotten. I wonder if the artists knew at the time how much they'd affect so many people, even kids listening to them now all these years later seem to appreciate them, if the comments at YouTube are anything to go by.

21. Buffalo Springfield "What It's Worth"
there's battle lines being drawn
nobody's right if everybody's wrong
young people speakin their minds
getting so much resistance far behind

it's time we stop,
hey what's that sound
everybody look what's goin down

what a field day for the heat
a thousand people in the street
singin songs that they carry inside
mostly say hurray for our side

These lyrics prompted me and my friends to protest the Vietnam War and they still resound in my mind
as I listen to the bullshit from the GOP

33. Awe.. That's beautiful!
If I Can Dream-Lyrics

"There must be light, burning brighter, somewhere
Got to be birds flying higher, in a sky, more blue
If I can dream, of a better land, where all my brothers walk hand in hand
Tell me why, oh why, oh why can't my dream come true?
Oh why?

There must be peace and understanding, sometime
Strong winds of promise that will blow away, all the doubt and fear
If I can dream of a warmer sun, where hope keeps shining on everyone
Tell me why, oh why, oh why won't that sun appear?

We're lost in a cloud, with too much rain
We're trapped in a world, that's troubled with pain
But as long as a man has the strength to dream
He can redeem his soul and fly

Deep in my heart, there's a trembling, question
Still I am sure that the answer's gonna come somehow
Out there in the dark
There's a beckoning candle
And while I can think, while I can talk, while I can stand, while I can walk
While I can dream, please let my dream, come true
Right now
Let it come true right now"

35. I'm glad you like it too and thanks for posting the lyrics
From wiki:

"If I Can Dream" is a song made famous by Elvis Presley, written by Walter Earl Brown<1> and notable for its direct quotations of Martin Luther King, Jr. It was recorded by Presley in June 1968, two months after King's assassination. The recording was first released to the public as the finale of Presley's '68 Comeback Special.

So much of the music in the sixties had meaning behind it. A group would sit around listening to an album and discuss what we thought the singer was trying to say. It brought about many stimulating conversations.
