what to do when you’re riding america’s longest escalator
Washington is home to the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere. At a length of 70 meters the escalator at the Wheaton Metro stop takes almost three minutes to ride from one end to the other.

1. When I was in DC last month, I rode that.
I had no idea that it was the world's longest, tho. When I was riding it, I couldn't help but start whistling "Stairway to Heaven". That got a laugh.

3. I ride it weekly.
It's my home-station escalator, I live about 1/2mi. away. The scary part is that they have to place a Metro cop at the bottom of it during rush hours because about once a month someone gets pissed off because someone else is obstructing their walk down it or being otherwise not-cooperative so they shove them...

.
down the escalator.
.
.
and it's steep enough that given momentum, there is a good chance.
.
.
you're not stopping
.
.
before the bottom...and perhaps you're taking a few other people with you. :scared:

My stepfather is acrophobic and my mother is claustrophobic and afraid of being below-ground...panic-response phobias. When they come to visit, they have to get off at Silver Spring and take the bus because they'd both have to be sedated and gurneyed to get them out of Wheaton station.
