Rush hosed AGAIN.
When will this madness end?!

http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/stopthepresses/392264/guns-n-roses-heart-cure-joan-jett-among-first-time-rock-hall-nominees/

First, let’s address the most burning question surrounding the 2011 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations: No, Rush didn’t make the cut, again. Let the annual wailing and gnashing of teeth begin!.

But, the great prog blackout notwithstanding, some other traditional oversights did get addressed with this year’s round of 15 nods.

Guns 'n' Roses but still no Rush?! :banghead:

They keep overlooking the Monkees!

8. By the way, I have seen 3/4ths of the Monkees live
and they put on a great show. Funny and nostalgia-y.

This was back in the mid-late 80s and as far as I know they hadn't toured in forever. My step sons were around 10 and 13 and had been watching Monkees reruns on MTV for a while. I have always been a guy that loves live shows and I went to a lot of them both with and without their mother but she was never too keen for them to come too (mostly all hard rock and metal and things that may not have been appropriate for them and/or shit they didn't like anyway) BUT they were always whining about not ever getting to go to a concert so one day I told them smugly well OK, if the Monkees ever come around I will take you to see them.

And I'll be goddamned if the VERY NEXT DAY a they didn't effing announce a Monkees tour. I looked up the dates and the closest place to us was about a 3 hour drive but a promise is a promise and so we packed up a pic-a-nic basket and drove to the Sarasota fairgrounds and saw the Monkees with Gary Puckett and the Union Gap and the Grass Roots.

I had a helluvva lot better time than I expected.

22. I saw them this summer!
I had always liked them but had never really learned much about them. When I saw they were touring this summer I rented the tv show and started listening to their music more and did some research.

I had no idea before that their music was soooo varied. I thought it was all "Daydream Believer" and "Last Train to Clarksville". I didn't know about "Porpoise Song" and "Daily Nightly" and "Papa Gene's Blues" and all the other amazing songs. They put out more good music in about 3 years than most groups do in a lifetime, and I'll be damned if Mike Nesmith didn't get me to start liking a little country (I'm a lifelong country music hater!).

Just like you said, the show was funny, full of nostalgia and in-jokes for people who were familiar with the TV show, and they sounded great. Now I'm trying to figure out how to see Nesmith play, but though he's started playing one-off shows again it's in places like west Texas where it's hard to get to...

BTW, I saw the Grass Roots several years ago at a free oldies show. They were such a great band and so underrated.

Anyway, I'm glad you did that with your stepsons. It's a great memory for you all and I'm sure they liked it too!

21. Me too :-)
Not my cup of tea, but I do think they belong in the hall of fame because it should be based on their influence and popularity, not any one person or group of people's particular taste.

2. I am happy they were not nominated. Why would they want to be enshrined in that shithole place?
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? What a fucking joke. I hope they never get nominated. They're too good for that and it would be insulting to get nominated at this point. They should have been nominated in their first year of eligibility.

9. I remember visiting the RRHOF, and seeing a display about all those nominated
Including a letter from a rep of the Sex Pistols in response to their nomination (spelling and grammar is exactly as they wrote it):

Next to the SEX PISTOLS rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain. Your museum. Urine in wine. Were not coming. Were not your monkey and so what? Fame at $25,000 if we paid for a table, or $15000 to squeak up in the gallery, goes to a non-profit organisation selling us a load of old famous. Congratulations. If you voted for us, hope you noted your reasons. Your anonymous as judges, but your still music industry people. Were not coming. Your not paying attention. Outside the shit-stem is a real SEX PISTOL

(I would have posted the image of the letter, but I believe it's copyrighted.)

After seeing that, I somehow never felt so bad about Rush being excluded.

10. This is just silly at this point.
How can one of the most popular and (arguably influential) rock acts of the past 40 years be ignored so steadfastly? Rock snob hatred of prog is tiresome and boring at this point. GIVE them their due.

23. Indeed.
King Crimson are long overdue for induction as well, though I am certain Robert Fripp could not care less. But still...

Are Emerson, Lake & Palmer in? For that matter are Yes in?

25. Nope and nope.
I just recently watched a 29-minute KC video from 1974 with the Cross/Wetton/Bruford/Fripp line-up. Somehow, the words "decades ahead of their time" doesn't quite cut it.

Yet every person judging and deciding the Hall entries only cares about 1977 NYC and whatever they're playing on your local classic rawk station.

26. The Wetton/Bruford/Cross KC
was one of most adventurous and amazing bands that has ever trod the boards. Their stuff still sounds futuristic today.

The German pioneers Can also deserve a spot, though I know that very few people have heard of them in this country. Amazing stuff that still holds up 35-40 years later as being further out than most people have ever imagined to this day.

12. That place gets more and more ridiculous each year...
Their pathetic attempts to stay hip and relevant, at the expense of groups that only total idiots would deny were huge parts of Rock and Roll's history is just completely over the top.

Keep in mind I like a ton of the groups and artists that have gotten in, and plenty of ones that will never get in. I'm as far from a strict classic rock traditionalist as you can get.

But to have The Stooges (love), or Tom Waits (love), and even bands like Talking Heads (like) over stuff like Rush or any of the countless other bands (even some I hate like Kiss) makes the entire hall a joke.

And I'm not anti-rap at all but the inclusion of rap artists/groups instead of so many straight forward rock bands strains the limits of sense and reason.
