Where does one buy a masculine patterned inexpensive duvet cover?
Edited on Mon Oct-03-11 02:31 AM by Chan790
I've been looking online for an hour and I've seen more ruffles, floral patterns and ugly shades of off-pink than you can imagine...but where does one go to buy a duvet cover that matches gold satin sheets and says "I have taste but I'm not feminine." I'm about to scream.

Something like this would be awesome.

(Edit: The first pic too huge. I like this dark-on-dark floral damask better than the color-dots anyways)

or maybe some camo print?

You could also look for a local outlet mall if you want to shop locally...Much easier to move through than a mall. :)

2. Try Garnet Hill. They must have an online site. If not IKEA has duvet covers.

3. Overstock has a big selection.

They don't have everything in every size and prices range from very inexpensive to pricy, but I've had good luck with them.

7. I am so masculine, I don't know what a duvet cover is ...
can you leave it on the bed (I'm assuming since you made a reference to sheets, it's on a bed) when you're having sex?

8. A duvet is simply a down comforter; a duvet cover is a decorative bag
made of the same kind of fabric as a bedsheet. You put the duvet (comforter) inside the duvet cover and it keeps it clean. So it's on top of you rather than under you. You could have sex underneath the duvet and its cover if your bedroom is chilly; otherwise you might get too warm. Depending.

14. I may have to forward that link to a friend.
He has a very very death metal brother and a prissy pink princess sister-in-law home-decor-fascist who treats his bro badly and whom everybody hates.

The brother doesn't hate his wife because he has no self-esteem. Meanwhile she's abusive like whoa! So there is a recurring theme of us buying Bro gifts that SIL will hate...like 10000 Magic: The Gathering Cards in a blind lot (meaning the seller just wants them gone and has no idea what's in the box. Usually crap, rarely something rare) for $175, real antique-Italian-marble D&D dice (the dice obviously aren't antiques...the marble is "recovered and re-purposed") and books on string-theory (he's a nerd...she's an idiot.) to make it clear "I see what you're doing and don't like it."

24. Made in USA is masculine
As is denim. As is not matching, in the current stylistic sense of matching. In other senses, historic senses, I am sure that denim matches gold.

25. I made my own
Like you I hated everything I saw with all the cabbage head flower explosions and PINK PINK PINK. And I'm female.

I found some really fantastic material at the fabric store that was even on a great sale so I also bought enough to make covers for the big throw pillows (and I still have quite a bit left over that I think I'll use to make smaller throw pillows with). Though I'm pretty amazing at creative stuff like beadwork and embroidery and even pretty complicated clothing alterations or invisible mending by hand, I totally suck at making the most simple things on the sewing machine even with one of those "anyone can do it" type patterns. But making my own duvet cover was easy. Ok, I admit it... I ended up sewing the whole thing by hand since I can't seem to manage a straight line on the sewing machine or keep the needle from breaking running over the pins.

It's basically just two huge pieces of material a tiny fraction larger than the comforter with a flap on the backside to keep the comforter inside the duvet cover. I did end up sewing some small circles of velcro on the flap to keep the comforter from creeping out. The hardest part was spreading out the material on the living room floor to measure and cut since I have a big hairy dog, and eliminating dog hair completely (or even marginally) is totally impossible. So, I bought a cheap plastic drop cloth sheet at the hardware store and put that down on the floor first to both measure the comforter's dimensions and to spread out the material for the duvet cover to measure and cut.

It ended up being WAY cheaper than buying a duvet cover, and I got really fabulous material that I just love. Turned out the easy part for me was doing some nice embroidery around the edges of the duvet cover and on the pillow covers I made in off-white to match my sheets.

27. I'm leaning the same way...
well, not DIY really. I found someone on Etsy that will sew it on professional equipment and use hi-quality buttons for $80...but I have to buy the fabric. So now I'm looking for fabric in the right width as another option.

Do you remember how much you used in sq. yds? I have no idea how much I need to buy for a Full/Queen-sized duvet.

28. Ask one of the workers at the fabric store
Edited on Tue Oct-04-11 07:54 PM by TorchTheWitch
Like one of the older ladies that does the measuring and cutting. They know everything. Get the dimensions of the comforter and add about two inches all the way around to allow for seams and the thickness of the comforter. Then you'll also need material for the flap which would be the width of the shorter part of the comforter and needs to be roughly a foot and a quarter to a foot and a half wide to make the flap that folds over. I always have to ask them to figure these things out for me because I really suck at math. Most of them can figure it out in their heads, too.

I can't remember how much fabric I needed mostly because I ended up buying what was left of the whole bolt of material since it was such a good price and I knew I could always use any extra to make other stuff with. My comforter was a little complicated because I bought a king sized but wanted it a little thicker so I cut a little off of the width so it's an odd size somewhere between a king and a queen. That's why I had to actually spread it out on the floor and measure it because I couldn't just read the dimensions off the tag since I had cut it down a little.

I think I'm going do the button idea of yours. The velcro works well, but every once in a while you have to pick out dog hair and fuzz that gets stuffed in the velcro and keeps it from sticking to it's opposite piece very well. Just a couple of weeks ago I tried sewing on snaps but they ended up being useless and came undone way too easy. I don't know why the heck I didn't think of buttons myself. That would be perfect.

One thing I also ended up doing is finishing the seams so they don't fray and create balls of loose threads on the inside of the duvet cover. I just bought a few packets of that folded seam tape and sewed it around on the ends of all the seams.

You'll be really happy you had your's made with material you picked yourself, and it still ends up being cheaper (and with better quality material than most of them are made with). I just LOVE mine. I don't know why I wasted so much time prowling all the stores trying to find something that I at least didn't completely hate. Who are the fools that design this crap anyway??? It's all so damn UGLY!

On Edit: make sure you check the washing instructions of whatever fabric you buy to make sure it's something you can just toss in the washing machine when you need to.
